Chapter 11 - The Arrest

Claire was arrested eleven days after slap.

Charges initially included domestic battery involving a child and forgery/identity-related offenses connected to documents, with additional child-endangerment allegations reviewed.

No attempted murder.

No aggravated fantasy.

The slap caused bruising, not surgical damage.

The larger pattern supported prosecution but charges followed statutes and evidence.

She posted bond.

Conditions:

No contact with Lily.

No entry to my residence except supervised property retrieval.

No access to Lily’s trust or medical portals.

I watched from Megan’s driveway when news arrived.

I felt relief.

Then grief.

I had loved Claire.

That did not vanish because police agreed she had committed crimes.

Lily asked:

“Is Claire in jail?”

“For now she was arrested. She may be out while case happens.”

“Will she come here?”

“No.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

“What if judge says?”

“We follow court, but your safety comes first.”

She nodded.

Then asked:

“Does Claire hate me?”

I answered carefully.

“I think Claire handled her feelings in harmful ways. That is about Claire, not about whether you deserved love.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Would you have stayed married if camera didn’t work?”

The question stopped me.

“I don’t know.”

She looked away.

That answer was honest and terrible.

I added:

“But it worked. You told me. And now I know.”
