Chapter 13 - The Hospital’s Mistake

Lurie’s internal review found Claire had been allowed more access than she should have.
I had listed her as emergency contact.
Authorized her to receive information.
During hospitalization, staff naturally treated her as parent-like caregiver.
She attended discharge education.
Signed some receipt forms.
No one had verified she lacked legal guardianship because I was present most times.
That was not medical negligence necessarily.
But system strengthened Claire’s belief she could act.
Hospital changed chart banner:
LEGAL PARENT/GUARDIAN: DANIEL HALE ONLY.
No residential referral without direct guardian confirmation.
Again, repair.
