Chapter 23 - Vanessa and Claire

I met Vanessa alone for first time sixteen years after slap.

Lily was twenty-three.

Vanessa asked.

I agreed.

Coffee shop.

She looked older.

So did I.

“I owe you something.”

“Money?”

She laughed.

“Restitution finished.”

I knew.

“An apology without Lily in middle.”

I waited.

“I forged your signature.”

“Yes.”

“I made family think you were spending recklessly.”

“Yes.”

“I used Daniel’s weakness.”

“Yes.”

“I used Lily as cover.”

“Yes.”

“I hit her.”

“Yes.”

No explanation.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

I breathed.

“Thank you.”

She waited.

Maybe for forgiveness.

Did not ask.

Good.

I said:

“I forgive you.”

Her face collapsed.

I surprised myself.

“That doesn’t mean I trust you with everything.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t mean I think prison fixed you.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t mean we become sisters.”

“I know.”

“Then okay.”

She smiled through tears.

“Okay.”

Forgiveness became removing debt of hatred, not restoring previous access.

That definition worked for me.
