Chapter 21 - Daniel Learns to Stop Fixing

At fifty, Daniel had become better at not managing emotions.

Hard-won.

When Lily failed driving test, he did not call instructor.

When she broke up with first boyfriend, he did not threaten boy.

When I took a new job requiring travel, he did not assume it meant marriage distance.

Ordinary evidence of growth.

He eventually became CEO of Parker Hospitality after outside search.

Board chose him.

He asked whether I thought accepting was repeating family patterns.

I said:

“Do you want job?”

“Yes.”

“Are you qualified?”

“Yes.”

“Will you be supervised?”

“Yes.”

“Then stop making every success suspicious because Vanessa failed.”

Another trauma distortion.

Good.

He accepted.
