Chapter 19 - Lily at Twelve

At twelve, Lily asked for case records.
We said not all yet.
She got age-appropriate summary.
She hated that.
“Why do adults decide what truth kids can handle?”
“Because brains develop.”
“Convenient.”
Yes.
We showed original video only if therapist supported.
She chose to watch.
Paused before slap.
“I remember.”
Then played.
Afterward she said:
“She looks crazy.”
I corrected gently.
“She made a cruel choice. We don’t need to diagnose.”
“Mom.”
“Sorry.”
She laughed.
Then saw herself.
Pink dress.
Tiara.
Crying.
She turned away.
“Why did everyone stand there?”
Video showed guests frozen seconds.
“Shock.”
“Why didn’t they help?”
“I got there quickly.”
“Dad?”
“He came with camera.”
She watched.
Then:
“You got there first.”
“Yes.”
No competition.
Just fact.
She asked:
“Did Dad know Aunt Vanessa was stealing?”
“No.”
“Was he stupid?”
I almost choked.
Daniel answered:
“Financially? A little.”
She laughed.
Then serious:
“Did you trust her more than Mom?”
Daniel waited.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I had known her longer.”
“Bad reason.”
“Yes.”
“You trust Mom now?”
“Yes.”
“More?”
Daniel smiled.
“Different.”
Good.
