Chapter 14 - What Lily Knows

We told Lily only what she needed.
“Aunt Vanessa broke rules with money.”
“Did she steal?”
“Yes.”
“Mine?”
“Some belonged to trust for you.”
“Can I have it?”
Seven.
“Not like piggy-bank money.”
She sighed.
“Adults ruin money.”
Correct.
“Aunt Vanessa is going away because she broke laws and hit me?”
“Yes.”
“Because I told?”
“No.”
“Because camera?”
“The camera helped adults know truth.”
She thought.
“What if no camera?”
Hard.
“We still would believe you.”
That was most important.
She stared.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“What if everyone said she didn’t?”
“I would believe you.”
Daniel said:
“Me too.”
Lily looked at him.
“You believed Aunt Vanessa before.”
Oof.
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why should I believe you now?”
Silence.
I did not rescue.
He answered:
“You don’t have to yet.”
My heart stopped.
Good.
“I have to show you.”
Lily considered.
“Okay.”
That sentence became his mission.
Not prove.
Show.
Months.
