Chapter 8 - The Gray Case

The gray archival case was empty when police recovered it from Chad’s SUV.
But forensic technicians found traces.
Paper fibers.
A partial latent print belonging to Professor Shaw.
Chloe’s print.
Wyatt’s.
And a tiny fragment of adhesive label reading:
MER 06 / TRANSFER B
Meridian.
The original shipping ledger remained missing.
The photograph had been copied.
The index card with Julian reference recovered? The case empty, photo Marcus had copy from IG archive. The physical index missing.
Who had taken contents?
Chad blamed Wyatt.
Brantley blamed Chad.
Wyatt said nothing.
Their phones answered partly.
At 11:11 p.m., after chasing Chloe toward hospital, Chad texted:
I have case.
Wyatt:
OPEN IT.
Chad:
Photo. ledger. card.
Brantley:
Burn it.
Wyatt:
NO. Dad wants ledger.
Then:
Chad:
Where do I take?
Wyatt:
SUV.
At 11:26, after hospital security appeared:
Wyatt:
Paper with names?
Chad:
She has something.
That explained bloodstained note.
Chloe had written names before passing out and hidden paper in torn sweatshirt.
Smart.
But case contents were in SUV.
By 11:40, one of the three called someone.
Phone records:
Wyatt called Malcolm Holbrook for 2 minutes 18 seconds.
Then Chad called his father.
Brantley called Helena.
At 12:03, the SUV’s telematics showed rear hatch opened at a private parking garage owned by Holbrook Dynamics.
Vehicle remained eight minutes.
Then drove to hospital later when boys returned to intimidate Chloe? Actually they came next day. It could have been parked there overnight, then returned. Good.
Surveillance from garage showed an unidentified older man approach SUV.
Face partially visible.
Marcus enlarged legally received footage.
Vale.
Adrian Vale removed something from cargo area.
The ledger.
So Vale was physically involved after assault.
That was major.
Federal agents sought arrest warrant based alias/fraud and obstruction.
Before they found him, he vanished.
Again.
Julian cursed.
I said:
“Stop acting surprised.”
“He’s seventy.”
“So?”
“He still moves like smoke.”
“Don’t admire him.”
“I don’t.”
“You do a little.”
“Shut up.”
Nineteen years disappeared.
Then the federal inspector general finally explained what Meridian ledger contained.
Not weapon plans.
Not operational secrets likely to endanger public.
Financial and logistics records.
Between 2004 and 2006, a chain of subcontractors billed the government for disposal of sensitive navigation modules.
Some modules were not destroyed.
They were rerouted through commercial intermediaries and later sold overseas in violation of export controls.
Holbrook predecessor company appeared in payment chain.
Vale approved exceptions that enabled transfers.
Why?
Likely money.
Shell accounts traced to trust structures benefiting him.
Meridian evidence could expose long concealed fraud and potentially serious national security offenses.
Why had prosecution never happened?
The original investigation was compromised.
An internal official shut it down citing intelligence equities.
That official died years ago.
No evidence Alexander or Vanguard participated.
Julian’s duplicate ledger was potentially the only surviving proof connecting Vale’s codes to transfers.
Vale faked death to avoid later scrutiny.
Malcolm’s father died before investigation reopened.
Malcolm inherited company and discovered legacy risk.
Rather than disclose, he spent years trying to locate Julian’s copy.
Then archival review in 2026? Current date 2026, yes. A government declassification and contract reconciliation initiative surfaced old records.
Professor Shaw accidentally found supporting materials in donation box.
Everything converged.
And Chloe became vulnerable because she carried evidence.
Wyatt knew enough from his father’s conversations to believe retrieving it would protect family.
He recruited Chad and Brantley.
They planned intimidation.
They escalated into savage assault.
Were they ordered to harm her?
No evidence.
That distinction prevented Malcolm from being charged with her physical attack at that stage.
But federal agents found one message from Malcolm to Wyatt before party:
Get the archive material back. Do not involve police. Do not do anything stupid.
Wyatt replied:
Relax.
That would haunt him.
Malcolm knew son was going to retrieve material from Chloe without authorities.
He told him not to involve police.
Potential conspiracy/obstruction questions.
But “do not do anything stupid” cut against ordering violence.
Truth was messy.
Chloe learned.
She typed:
SO WYATT DID THIS BECAUSE HIS DAD WAS SCARED OF PAPER?
“Yes.”
AND CHAD AND BRANTLEY?
“They joined him.”
WHY?
“We’ll find out.”
She stared.
Then:
PEOPLE LIKE THEM THINK CONSEQUENCES ARE FOR OTHER PEOPLE.
I could not argue.
Then her surgeon entered.
More imaging.
Recovery going well.
A small victory.
Later that night, Julian called.
“They found Vale’s safe house.”
“Where?”
“Empty.”
“Anything?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Photographs.”
“Of?”
He went quiet.
“You.”
Of course.
“Chloe?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Years.”
My skin went cold.
“Years?”
“Earliest photo is from her high school graduation.”
I closed eyes.
May you like
Vale had been watching us long before Professor Shaw found the case.
The attack may have been opportunity, not beginning.
