Chapter 19 - Rebecca’s Box

While cleaning attic, Chloe found one of Rebecca’s boxes.
My late wife labeled everything.
TAXES.
SCHOOL.
PHOTOS.
THINGS DANIEL WILL LOSE.
That one was accurate.
Inside:
Old letters.
Chloe’s first drawings.
Rebecca’s public defender badge.
A small envelope addressed:
FOR CHLOE WHEN SHE’S OLD ENOUGH TO ASK HARD QUESTIONS.
Chloe was twenty one by then.
She looked at me.
“Am I old enough?”
“I don’t know.”
“Useful.”
We opened together.
Rebecca wrote years before cancer.
She told Chloe:
Your father had a life before us that he rarely talks about. I know enough to know some of it hurt him and some of it made him proud. If you ever learn things he did not tell you, remember secrecy and dishonesty are not always identical, but they can feel identical to the person kept outside.
I had to stop.
Chloe kept reading.
Ask him questions. Make him answer what belongs to you. Let him keep what does not.
I laughed through tears.
“Your mom was annoying.”
“She’s dead and still winning arguments.”
“Yes.”
The letter did not excuse me.
It gave framework.
Chloe asked more over months.
Not operational secrets.
Human things.
“Were you afraid?”
“Yes.”
“Did friends die?”
“Yes.”
“Did Vale save your life ever?”
“Yes.”
That surprised her.
“Then he became bad?”
“People are not clean categories.”
“Did you love him?”
“As commander, mentor. Yes.”
“Did that make betrayal worse?”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever think about killing him after what he did to me?”
I looked.
Truth.
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because you needed me free.”
She sat silent.
Then:
“Good.”
That was the clearest measure of change.
Old Alexander might have mistaken revenge for duty.
Father understood staying mattered.
Chloe’s jaw healed well.
Not perfectly.
She had two dental implants.
A small scar beneath chin.
Occasional pain in cold weather.
One side clicked when she chewed.
No magical total erasure.
She returned to school full time.
Graduated one year late.
History and information science.
Her thesis:
Provenance, Power, and Institutional Memory in Donated Corporate Archives.
Of course.
Professor Shaw supervised with independent co-adviser because conflict history.
Chloe received honors.
No speech about overcoming.

She complained graduation gown still smelled like plastic.
Some things returned exactly.
