Chapter 23 - The Photograph

The photograph that started everything returned to Chloe after evidence retention allowed a certified copy.

Original stayed archive.

She held copy.

Vale and Malcolm outside hangar.

Six months before attack.

“What do I do with it?”

“Whatever you want.”

“Burn?”

“Your choice.”

She looked.

“No.”

“Why?”

“I’m archivist.”

Of course.

She placed it in acid free sleeve.

At bottom wrote:

Context matters more than image.

Then filed with personal papers.

No shrine.

No fear.

One day she asked:

“Do you think if I hadn’t opened the gray case none of this would happen?”

I had thought same.

“Maybe not then.”

“Then it’s my fault.”

“No.”

“You just said…”

“No. A decision can change sequence without owning someone else’s violence.”

She stared.

“Professor Shaw gave it to me.”

“She made poor choice.”

“Wyatt saw.”

“Yes.”

“I opened.”

“Yes.”

“They attacked.”

“Yes.”

“Who owns that?”

“They do.”

She nodded.

Therapy language had become family language.

Cause is not responsibility.

Useful.

Then:

“If you hadn’t called Julian?”

“They still attacked you.”

“But Vale wouldn’t find him.”

“True.”

“Would that be your fault?”

I thought.

“No.”

“Good.”

She smiled.

“Testing.”

May you like

“Rude.”

Healthy.
