Chapter 7 - The Senator’s Choice

Helena Sterling was not a good person simply because she cooperated.

She had waited.

Called university president before police.

Allowed attorneys to reach Brantley.

Thought about reputation while Chloe lay bleeding.

But when federal investigators asked whether anyone had contacted her about suppressing footage, she answered.

Malcolm Holbrook.

At 12:04 a.m.

His message:

Helena, keep your people calm. This is bigger than the kids.

Her reply:

What does that mean?

Malcolm:

Old national security material. Wyatt was trying to retrieve stolen property.

Helena:

From a girl?

Malcolm:

From Sterling’s daughter.

Helena told investigators she assumed he meant Brantley’s family because same surname.

Then Malcolm clarified:

Alexander Sterling. Vanguard.

That was before my call to Julian.

So Malcolm knew exactly who I was.

Helena had never heard Vanguard.

She searched me online.

Found nothing unusual.

Then at 1:30, Malcolm called.

No recording.

Helena took contemporaneous handwritten notes because she was a senator trained to document sensitive calls.

Those notes became crucial.

Malcolm said:

“Alexander will activate an old line.”

Helena:

“What line?”

Malcolm:

“When he does, we find the man who kept Meridian.”

Helena:

“Who?”

Malcolm:

“Vance.”

There.

Julian.

The last witness.

Helena said she ended call and contacted private counsel, not authorities.

Why?

“Because Malcolm implied classified material.”

Cowardice disguised as caution.

But the note proved preexisting knowledge.

Federal investigators now had probable cause to dig deeper into Holbrook communications.

Malcolm’s lawyers argued Helena misunderstood.

Maybe.

Need corroboration.

They found it in Holbrook internal messaging.

A restricted project label:

MERIDIAN RECONCILIATION.

Started eight months earlier.

Participants:

Malcolm Holbrook.

General Adrian Vale under alias Arthur Vail.

Two senior compliance executives.

Outside intelligence contractor.

Purpose stated:

Resolve legacy liability before inspector general archival review.

Buried inside documents was a line:

Locate J.V. archive before FY27 disclosure.

Julian Vance.

Then:

A.S. dormant. Family contact may compel activation.

My hands went numb when I read that later.

Family contact.

Chloe.

Someone had contemplated using me through family before Wyatt ever saw the gray case.

But did they plan assault?

No direct evidence.

The plan suggested monitoring.

The boys may have turned document recovery into violence on their own.

That distinction mattered morally and legally.

Malcolm could be involved in targeted coercion without ordering broken jaw.

Vale’s role still unclear.

Federal agents now believed he was alive under a protected private identity, not government witness protection.

How had he faked death?

Not enough evidence yet.

Old records showed remains from crash were never individually identified due condition and classified location.

A bureaucratic assumption.

Vale may have staged absence with help.

Julian became federal witness under protection.

He hated it.

“They put me in a hotel with floral curtains.”

“Good.”

“Cruel.”

“Survive.”

Marcus said:

“He complained less under mortar fire.”

Julian:

“Mortars had dignity.”

For first time, I laughed.

Chloe heard through video call and typed:

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?

I told her more.

Task Force Vanguard.

Small joint operations unit.

Counterproliferation, logistics interdiction, intelligence support.

No superhero missions.

No secret assassinations.

High risk work under classified authorities.

Vale commanded above us.

Julian deputy.

Marcus communications.

Others.

I led field element.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She typed.

BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT I’D BE SAFER NOT KNOWING?

“Yes.”

WAS I?

That hurt.

“No.”

She stared.

Then:

DON’T LIE TO ME AGAIN.

“I won’t.”

That promise would cost me later.

Because there were things even federal secrecy agreements made hard to explain.

But I could tell her what affected her.

That was enough.

Then prosecutors charged Chad, Brantley, and Wyatt formally.

All three pleaded not guilty initially.

Bail conditions tightened after hospital intimidation.

Electronic monitoring.

No campus access.

No contact with Chloe, Shaw, each other outside counsel? Courts usually cannot bar codefendants entirely? Could restrict. Fine.

Wyatt’s father hired aggressive defense team.

Chad’s father funded private investigation into Chloe.

Legal if within bounds.

It quickly crossed.

A private investigator photographed Chloe leaving reconstructive follow up.

He questioned her roommate.

He obtained old social media posts.

No crime necessarily.

But one investigator attempted to pay a student for rumors about Chloe’s sexual history.

Her attorney reported.

Judge issued protective order limiting harassment.

I wanted to confront Victor Kensington.

I did not.

My old team would have understood why.

My daughter needed a father who could sit in court without giving defense attorneys a new exhibit.

Then Detective Mercer finally broke.

He asked to meet Park and me.

He looked sick.

“I need to correct something.”

Park became still.

“What?”

“The first night.”

He swallowed.

“Captain called before I reached hospital.”

“Who?”

“Deputy Chief Lawson.”

“Why?”

“He said Kensington family counsel wanted this handled quietly.”

Park stared.

“Did he order you to slow walk?”

“No.”

“Exactly what?”

“Don’t make arrests until command review.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was scared.”

“What did you do?”

“I delayed requesting warrants until morning.”

My hands tightened.

Chloe’s backpack disappeared during that window.

Mercer’s delay may have mattered.

“Were you paid?”

“No.”

“Threatened?”

“My wife works for Kensington Development.”

There.

Conflict.

Not bribery.

Pressure.

He had made a cowardly choice.

He provided his phone.

Messages.

No money.

Park referred internal affairs.

Mercer was removed from case.

His career might end.

But his cooperation opened another line:

Deputy Chief Lawson had received campaign support? Police not elected. Maybe future sheriff campaign. Let's say his brother's nonprofit had Kensington donations. But avoid sprawling. Could be Lawson attended Kensington charity board. Need not criminal unless evidence.

The cover up was becoming bigger.

Not because everyone was corrupt.

May you like

Because influential families had built networks where small favors felt normal.

And small favors, combined, could make a nineteen year old disappear from the record.
