Chapter 10 - The First Boy to Break

Chad’s cooperation did not make him good.

I reminded myself because it was easy to feel relief when one attacker started telling truth.

He still laughed.

Still followed.

Still struck.

Still helped drag Chloe toward the SUV.

Still watched when Wyatt and Brantley continued.

Cooperation can reduce sentence.

It does not rewrite conduct.

Chloe agreed.

She typed:

HE TALKS NOW BECAUSE HE’S SCARED.

“Yes.”

NOT BECAUSE HE’S SORRY.

“Maybe both.”

DON’T CARE.

Fair.

Chad gave prosecutors access to his cloud account.

Videos.

Messages.

A private group chat named:

THE BOARD.

Members:

Chad.

Brantley.

Wyatt.

Six other wealthy students.

Most had nothing to do with assault.

The chat revealed months of arrogance.

Drugs.

Parties.

Cruel jokes.

Nothing automatically criminal.

Then a thread about Chloe.

Brantley:

Sterling girl thinks she’s better than us.

Wyatt:

She’s holding family archive.

Chad:

Then ask nice lol.

Brantley:

Already did.

Wyatt:

Tonight.

Chad:

What are we doing?

Wyatt:

Get case. Scare her.

Brantley:

And remind her dad he’s not invisible.

Chad:

Who’s dad?

Wyatt:

Old military ghost.

Then photograph of me.

The same old Vanguard image.

Chad:

No way.

Wyatt:

My dad says if he sees daughter hurt, he’ll call old number.

Brantley:

Then what?

Wyatt:

Not our problem.

That proved they knew Chloe was being used to provoke me.

Did they know severity planned?

No.

Wyatt later wrote:

No hospital.

Meaning he did not want injury severe enough for emergency care.

But after violence began, they did not stop.

The law would sort levels.

Then another message from Wyatt to an account named A.V.

We need not reveal Vale too early? now okay.

Wyatt:

She has case.

A.V.:

Good.

Wyatt:

What if she won’t give?

A.V.:

Make her father remember who he was.

Wyatt:

How?

A.V.:

He will understand when he sees what powerful men can do without consequence.

That sentence made me cold.

Vale weaponized arrogance.

He knew exactly which buttons to push in boys raised to believe family power insulated them.

He did not explicitly order broken bones.

He encouraged intimidation.

Prosecutors now had conspiracy theories connecting him to coercion.

Then:

A.V.:

Do not kill her.

Chloe read that later through victim counsel summary.

She stared at me.

I hated that she saw.

“Why did they show you?”

She typed:

I ASKED.

Of course.

Then:

HE THINKS THAT MAKES HIM BETTER?

“No.”

HE KNEW THEY’D HURT ME.

“Yes.”

That was enough.

Julian’s duplicate Meridian ledger was now in federal custody.

It contained account routing data and authorization markings.

Modern forensic review linked old shell entities to a trust controlled indirectly by Vale.

Payments totaling $6.3 million in historical dollars.

Holbrook predecessor benefited from government reimbursement and avoided losses on destroyed equipment.

Malcolm’s father likely knew.

Malcolm inherited records and eventually discovered scandal.

Rather than disclose, he hired Vale under alias to manage exposure.

Vale had financial leverage too.

If ledger surfaced, his false death and hidden assets collapsed.

Why keep Julian alive all these years?

Vale didn’t know where ledger moved.

He feared killing Julian could trigger dead man release.

So he watched.

Waited.

Then declassification review approached.

Time ran out.

Professor Shaw’s accidental discovery forced action.

Chloe became convenient trigger.

It was a plan built on fear and arrogance.

No secret superweapon.

No coup.

Money.

Reputation.

Old crimes.

The ordinary motives behind extraordinary damage.

Then federal agents found Vale.

Not through gunfight.

Through a pharmacy purchase under his alias linked to surveillance warrant.

He was arrested outside a private medical clinic in Maryland.

Seventy three years old.

Gray beard.

Walking cane.

No resistance.

When I saw booking photograph, I felt nothing.

Julian called.

“He looks old.”

“So do you.”

“Cruel.”

“Good.”

Then Julian said:

“He asked for you.”

“No.”

“You don’t want to hear?”

“No.”

“Alexander.”

“He used my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“He doesn’t get me.”

Silence.

Then Julian:

“That might be the first smart thing you’ve said since this started.”

May you like

Vale would speak through lawyers.

I would not give him another stage.
