Chapter 16 - Chloe Returns to Campus
Chloe returned on a Tuesday.
No cameras.
No speeches.
Professor Shaw met her outside archive building.
Chloe stopped.
Shaw kept distance.
“Do you want me to leave?”
Chloe said, slowly now:
“No.”
Her voice was still changed.
Softer.
Careful.
But hers.
They walked inside.
The archive room where gray case had started was closed during investigation.
University moved project elsewhere.
Chloe refused to abandon it.
“I’m not letting them decide my major.”
I smiled.
“Good.”
She looked at me.
“You don’t get to say good like you weren’t trying to make me transfer.”
Caught.
“I suggested.”
“You printed three transfer applications.”
“Preparation.”
“Control.”
“Parental concern.”
“Same thing with nicer font.”
Rebecca would have loved her.
Campus held disciplinary hearings for students in group chat.
Most were not involved in assault.
No mass expulsions.
Those who helped plan intimidation faced discipline.
Caleb Dunn, security manager who disabled cameras, was fired and later pleaded to obstruction/tampering related offense after admitting he knew Wyatt intended unauthorized confrontation.
He said:
“I thought rich kids wanted privacy for a party.”
Messages contradicted partly.
Wyatt explicitly said “need zone quiet.”
But Dunn claimed he did not know assault.
Prosecutors accepted limited plea.
Again, accountability proportional.
The university paid settlement to Chloe for security failures and negligence? Could be civil case. Chloe hired attorney, maybe settlement confidential. We can mention later.
She asked:
“Should I sue?”
Her lawyer, Megan Cross, said:
“You have strong claims against several parties, but litigation is long.”
Chloe looked at me.
I said:
“Your choice.”
She sued Holbrook Protective Solutions and university? University likely government/private? Let's say private university. She eventually settled with university and security contractor, funds used for medical costs and trauma care. But not needed now.
Then one day Chloe found something in her restored laptop.
A draft email she never sent.
To Professor Shaw.
Subject:
Why does Adrian Vale appear in Dad’s old photo?
She had seen the photograph before attack.
This changed a detail.
“What?”
“I opened the case.”
She admitted.
Previously said she never did.
I felt betrayal.
“You told police you didn’t.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because Shaw told me not to.”
“You lied in formal statement?”
“Initial hospital statement. I corrected now.”
We immediately called attorney and Park.
No hiding.
Chloe disclosed:
She opened gray case the afternoon before party.
Saw photograph.
Recognized me? I wasn't in Vale/Holbrook photo. Wait it was Vale and Malcolm. Maybe behind them an old wall photo included Vanguard patch? Better she saw ledger and index "Julian Vance". She searched Vance, found archived article with a group photo including Alexander. She realized connection.
She drafted email to Shaw asking why Dad’s old unit name appeared.
Never sent.
Then Wyatt approached next day.
So Wyatt may have learned she understood more.
Why lie?
Fear of getting Shaw fired.
Shame.
Prosecutors had to disclose correction.
Defense pounced.
Brantley trial already ended; federal cases ongoing. Wyatt plea. Civil.
It did not undo assault evidence.
But credibility issue.
I was angry.
Chloe cried.
“You told me not to lie.”
“Yes.”
“And you lied about your whole life.”
That stopped me.
“Not same.”
“It felt same.”
She was right emotionally.
Not legally.
I sat.
“I’m sorry.”
“So am I.”
We corrected record.
No disaster.
Truth can survive correction when disclosed promptly.
Park said:
“This is why we don’t build cases around perfect victims.”
That sentence stayed.
Chloe was brave.
Smart.
And had lied once under stress to protect professor.
Still victim.
Still credible when evidence corroborated.
Real people are messy.
Vale’s defense later tried to use it.
Jury would decide.
Then corrected email produced another clue.
Timestamp showed someone accessed Chloe’s university email draft before assault.
Unauthorized login from archive admin account.
Who?
A temporary IT consultant employed by Holbrook Foundation.
Another surveillance route.
Federal agents traced contractor.
He admitted Vale asked him to monitor keywords “Vance,” “Meridian,” and “Sterling.”
That explained how Vale knew Chloe had connected dots before party.
She became more than courier.
