Chapter 6 - Cameras That Failed on Command
Holbrook Protective Solutions did not control the entire university security network.
That mattered.
They maintained cameras in three parking structures and the North Service Road area under a five year contract.
The cameras that “malfunctioned” were all within their maintenance zone.
City traffic cameras fifty yards away worked perfectly.
So did a privately owned pharmacy camera across the intersection.
Detective Park requested footage.
The city video showed Chloe’s car leaving campus at 10:58 p.m.
A black SUV followed seventeen seconds later.
The pharmacy camera captured the SUV passing at 11:04.
Plate partially visible.
Registered to Kensington Development Group.
Chad’s father’s company.
That alone did not prove who drove.
Then hospital parking cameras.
11:19.
Chloe’s vehicle entered emergency entrance fast.
Black SUV followed.
Three young men emerged.
The hospital camera angle did not show first several seconds behind concrete column.
Then Chloe stumbled into view.
Brantley grabbed her hair.
Wyatt struck her.
Chad pulled backpack.
Chloe fell.
The footage was brutal.
Not six jaw fractures necessarily all visible, but enough.
Hospital security guard exited doors.
The three men fled.
That contradicted their initial attorneys’ statement that Chloe had been injured before they arrived.
Their story collapsed.
Prosecutors filed charges:
Aggravated assault related counts.
Unlawful restraint.
Attempted theft/robbery related to backpack depending state classification.
Conspiracy.
Separate hospital intimidation incident considered as witness tampering/retaliation.
Exact charges would evolve.
No attempted murder yet.
Evidence did not establish intent to kill.
Good.
Chad’s father Victor Kensington held press conference.
“My son will be vindicated.”
Reporter asked about video.
“No comment on selectively edited footage.”
It was full timestamped hospital footage.
Still.
Brantley’s mother, Senator Helena Sterling, issued written statement.
“I love my son. I also believe the justice system must operate without political interference.”
That surprised me.
Julian said:
“Don’t trust statements.”
“I don’t.”
But she did not publicly attack Chloe.
That mattered later.
Wyatt’s father Malcolm said nothing.
Holbrook Dynamics declined comment.
Then campus security audit produced the first direct cover up evidence.
At 10:42 p.m., sixteen minutes before Chloe left campus, a maintenance administrator logged into North Service Road camera cluster.

Temporary credential created that afternoon.
Authorization requested by a Holbrook Protective Solutions regional manager, Caleb Dunn.
Reason:
Firmware diagnostics.
Cameras were intentionally put into maintenance mode.
Emergency call box on Level C was disabled under same ticket.
At 11:32, cameras restored.
Perfect window.
Caleb Dunn lawyered up.
Wyatt’s personal phone showed texts to Dunn:
Need zone quiet tonight.
Dunn:
How long?
Wyatt:
45 max.
Dunn:
Your dad know?
Wyatt:
Don’t ask.
That was huge.
Still not proof Malcolm knew.
Wyatt may have abused family access.
Dunn may have followed heir without authority.
But it proved the outage was deliberate.
Then another text.
Wyatt to Chad:
Cam’s dark. Bring her through north.
Chad:
Brantley says no witnesses.
Brantley:
She gives case and walks.
At least they initially planned robbery/intimidation.
Then a later message after assault:
Chad:
She’s hurt bad.
Wyatt:
Shut up.
Brantley:
Call family.
Then:
Wyatt:
Dad will handle.
That sentence sounded like arrogance.
Maybe belief.
Prosecutor used carefully.
Meanwhile, Professor Shaw gave statement.
She found the Meridian material in a box donated by Holbrook Foundation as part of corporate history collection.
She recognized the name Julian Vance from an old newspaper obituary? But unit secret. Perhaps index card had initials only. She researched privately, found a 2008 veteran association paper referencing Julian. Fine.
She contacted a former DoD archive colleague.
He warned her the material might be improperly declassified.
She planned to return it through university counsel.
Then Wyatt saw the case.
He asked what it contained.
She refused.
Next day, her office was entered.
No forced door.
Her husband photographed.
She gave the case to Chloe because Chloe was leaving campus and she panicked.
A bad decision.
She admitted.
Not hero.
Her decision put Chloe in danger without explaining enough.
She cried during interview.
“I thought they wanted documents. I didn’t think they’d hurt her.”
Chloe later wrote:
I’M ANGRY AT HER.
“You can be.”
SHE USED ME.
“Maybe she was scared.”
STILL USED ME.
“Yes.”
No forced forgiveness.
Then Julian’s Meridian evidence was transferred to federal authorities.
The next morning, federal agents visited Holbrook Dynamics with subpoenas and preservation orders.
Not raid.
Document demand.
Malcolm Holbrook’s lawyers objected.
His board convened.
Stock? Private? Let's say privately held; board still.
Then Senator Helena Sterling called me personally.
I almost refused.
Maya? We don't have lawyer Maya in this story. Need introduce Alexander's attorney maybe Rachel Vance? No. Let's create Attorney Sarah Keene, but too many. Could simply say through counsel. Yet user wants story, can introduce. Let's create Eleanor Price, family/white collar attorney. But it's late. Maybe Park facilitated. Better: Helena called through Detective Park? Not appropriate. She called my public business number. Fine.
“Mr. Sterling, I need to tell you something about my son.”
“What?”
“Brantley called me at 11:36 that night.”
My body went cold.
“What did he say?”
“He said Wyatt had lost control.”
“Meaning?”
“He said Chloe was hurt.”
“What did you do?”
A pause.
“I called university president.”
There.
“Why?”
“To stop the situation from becoming public before I understood it.”
“You interfered.”
“Yes.”
Her voice broke.
“I told myself I was asking for facts.”
“What did you actually ask?”
“To keep campus police from making statements until counsel arrived.”
“Did you tell them to erase evidence?”
“No.”
“Pressure police?”
“No.”
“Did you call state officials?”
“No.”
“Can you prove?”
“My call records and chief of staff will be produced.”
“Why tell me?”
“Because I am going to tell investigators.”
She had decided not to protect Brantley at all costs.

That would split the three families.
And it would make Malcolm Holbrook much more dangerous politically, because the senator he expected to help was about to cooperate.
