Chapter 9 - Bianca’s Real Fear

Bianca asked for a plea meeting.

Not in the assault case alone.

Her attorney wanted to discuss broader cooperation.

Why?

Locker 3187.

Her father had started blaming her.

That family pattern was familiar.

Preston first.

Then Bianca.

Anyone below patriarch became expendable when the walls moved.

Bianca provided investigators with messages from Malcolm.

Three months before the cemetery:

Find out whether Whitfield kept Eleanor’s bracelet.

Bianca:

Why bracelet?

Malcolm:

Because Isabella gave it to her.

Bianca:

So?

Malcolm:

If Dante sees it, he’ll know Eleanor was the woman in the journal.

Bianca:

He already knows Eleanor’s name.

Malcolm:

Not what she had.

Another:

Do not let Moretti speak to Mara Whitfield.

That explained why Bianca reacted with such horror when Dante walked through cemetery gate.

She knew the one meeting Malcolm feared was happening in front of her.

But Bianca had another motive.

Jealousy.

Control.

Hatred toward me.

She was not merely following orders.

She admitted searching my room repeatedly.

She found pregnancy test.

Preston denied paternity.

Bianca chose to believe what enraged her because rage gave permission for cruelty.

At the cemetery she intended to take bracelet and humiliate me.

She did not intend to harm pregnancy, she claimed.

I believed only the last part because she kicked flowers, grabbed hair, slapped face, not abdomen.

Still assault.

Her attorney proposed plea:

Misdemeanor assault.

Protective order.

Restitution for medical costs/damaged property.

Cooperation in federal investigation.

The local prosecutor considered.

I gave victim statement.

“I do not want the case inflated because she is rich. I also do not want it minimized because she is rich.”

That was all.

Bianca ultimately pleaded guilty to assault and violation connected to later third party harassment? The gossip campaign could be civil. Let's say one assault count plus court sanction for indirect harassment, not separate criminal plea.

She received probation, community service, anger intervention, and strict no contact.

No jail.

Some readers would hate that.

I did not care.

The federal investigation was bigger.

Bianca’s cooperation could help reveal current obstruction by Malcolm.

Then she gave prosecutors one final recording.

Her father’s voice.

Two days after cemetery.

Malcolm:

“Tell Preston Mara stole from the estate.”

Bianca:

“She didn’t.”

“Then make it plausible.”

“What?”

“We need her credibility destroyed before Moretti gets the box.”

Bianca:

“What box?”

Malcolm:

“The one Eleanor should have emptied twenty years ago.”

There.

Malcolm knew the deposit box still existed.

How?

A bank officer?

Old records?

Investigators traced recent activity.

Someone connected to Thorne’s legal team had requested dormant box information six months earlier using a forged estate inquiry.

That was current conduct.

Potential obstruction and identity misuse.

Not just old crime.

Senator Thorne’s legal exposure expanded dramatically.

Preston filed for divorce from Bianca.

Not because he suddenly loved me.

Because their marriage had become mutual fear.

Bianca called him coward.

Correct.

He called her abusive.

Also correct.

Sometimes two people can be right about each other.

Then Preston asked to apologize to me.

I allowed five minutes.

He said:

“I’m sorry I left you the way I did.”

“That was three years ago.”

“I’m sorry I stayed silent while Bianca humiliated you.”

“Better.”

“I’m sorry I knew about searches and didn’t warn you.”

“Yes.”

He waited.

I did not say I forgive you.

Finally:

“I don’t know what else to say.”

“You don’t need to.”

He nodded.

At door:

“Mara, I did love you.”

I looked at him.

“Maybe.”

That hurt him.

Good.

Not because revenge.

Because love without loyalty becomes a word people use to rewrite themselves.
