Chapter 18 - The Moretti Name

Marriage did not turn me into Mrs. Moretti in every part of life.
Professionally, I remained Mara Whitfield.
Legally, I became Mara Whitfield Moretti.
Dante did not care.
His aunt cared.
We survived.
I became assistant general manager at the boutique hotel.
Then general manager.
Not because Dante bought it.
He did not.
Helen retired and recommended me.
I earned role.
That distinction mattered to me more than it probably should have.
Dante attended opening reception when hotel renovated.
He stood in back.
No entourage inside.
A guest recognized him and whispered.
I kept working.
Afterward:
“Did you enjoy being invisible?”
“No.”
“Good.”
He laughed.
Nora turned three.
No sign of her grandmother? Eleanor deceased, Isabella deceased. Helen became honorary Great Aunt Helen.
Our life settled.
Then Moretti Meridian’s historical audit found one unresolved liability.
Twenty years earlier, Lorenzo had used a shell company to purchase several Saint Gabriel properties after project collapsed.
Moretti Meridian still owned two through subsidiaries.
Dante had not known.
“What will you do?”
“Sell?”
“To whom?”
“Market.”
I shook head.
“What?”
“Who lost them?”
He stared.
Original families.
Some descendants still alive.
Dante’s counsel created a restitution process allowing verified former owners/heirs first opportunity to reclaim at heavily reduced or nominal cost where feasible, with legal safeguards.
Not every property could be returned.
One now held commercial building with third-party tenants.
That was compensated instead.
Messy.
Not cinematic.
Better.
The final Saint Gabriel civil settlement closed four years after cemetery.
Moretti side:
$14.6 million combined restitution and property adjustments.
Thorne estate:
$11.2 million through assets and insurers.
Funds administered independently.
Dante said:
“It will never equal what was taken.”
“No.”
“But something.”
“Yes.”
Then one claimant arrived at our house by mistake because reporter had published old address.
An elderly man.
He said:
“My mother died waiting for that building.”
Dante invited him inside.
I did not.
Security concern.
We met at office next day.
Boundaries and empathy can coexist.
The man received compensation later.
Dante stopped using phrase “make it right.”
He said:
May you like
“We can’t.”
That humility mattered.
