Chapter 10 - The Senator Falls Silent

Senator Malcolm Thorne withdrew from his re-election campaign before charges were announced.

Official reason:

Family health and private matters.

Nobody believed it.

Reporters camped outside the Thorne estate.

Dante refused interviews.

I refused everything.

Bianca disappeared from public view after plea.

Preston resigned from the Thorne Civic Initiative.

Then federal and state prosecutors announced coordinated indictments.

Not for every twenty year old theft.

Some conduct was too old for certain charges.

But the warehouse death reopened as a homicide related investigation because no statute of limitations barred murder.

Gavin Rourke’s testimony, Isabella’s journals, Eleanor’s preserved records, Locker 3187, old financial evidence, and new corroboration supported charges against Rourke and Malcolm connected to conspiracy, obstruction, and the fatal fire.

The exact highest count would be litigated.

No conviction yet.

Malcolm pleaded not guilty.

Important.

Dante’s father Lorenzo had died twelve years earlier.

He could not stand trial.

His role became part of evidence and public history.

Dante issued a statement through Moretti Meridian:

Evidence indicates companies controlled by my late father participated in fraudulent conduct connected to Saint Gabriel and that my father concealed facts surrounding my mother’s death. I will not defend conduct because it carries my name.

Moretti Meridian created an independent restitution fund for surviving Saint Gabriel residents whose claims could be verified.

Not hush money.

Administered by outside firm.

Dante used family assets.

His cousins accused him of destroying legacy.

He answered:

“A legacy built on theft should cost us.”

That quote leaked.

It made him famous in a way he hated.

I watched from my apartment.

Baby kicked.

Dante was at another legal meeting.

I placed my hand on my stomach.

“Your father has terrible timing.”

She kicked again.

Yes.

A girl.

We learned at twenty weeks but I had kept it private.

Dante knew after paternity confirmation.

He cried at ultrasound.

Quietly.

The powerful Moretti reputation did not survive pediatric imaging.

He was terrified of tiny feet.

We began having dinner once a week.

No labels.

No moving in.

Sometimes he annoyed me.

He checked exits automatically.

He sent a driver without asking once.

I sent driver away.

He apologized.

Never did it again.

He wanted to buy a crib.

I told him yes.

He ordered one costing more than my car.

I returned it.

He brought a normal one.

Progress.

Then my attorney Naomi called.

“Mara, the Thorne estate has filed a civil counterclaim.”

“For what?”

“Breach of confidentiality and theft of proprietary documents.”

I laughed.

“What documents did I steal?”

“They claim Eleanor’s records belonged to Saint Gabriel and therefore predecessor entities.”

“Mom copied them.”

“Exactly.”

“It’s nonsense.”

“Maybe. But it has purpose.”

“To scare me.”

“And complicate ownership of evidence.”

Malcolm was using civil litigation from jail? He was on bail awaiting trial perhaps, not jail. Fine. He used attorneys while released under conditions.

Dante said:

“I’ll pay every legal bill.”

I said:

“No.”

“Mara.”

“The case is against me.”

“I caused part of this.”

“My mother caused part. Your mother. Your father. Senator. Everyone can make a line.”

“So what do you want?”

“A loan agreement if I need help. Written. Repayable from settlement if we win.”

He stared.

“You’re impossible.”

“Good.”

We drafted it.

I never had to use full amount.

The counterclaim was dismissed months later because Thornes could not establish ownership superior to Eleanor’s lawfully retained copies and public policy issues overwhelmed their theory.

But before dismissal, discovery produced something startling.

My mother had not been merely a records clerk.

Eleanor Whitfield had once been a licensed accountant.

She gave up her career after Saint Gabriel.

May you like

Why did she tell me she had always worked clerical jobs?

Because she was hiding from the professional trail that Senator Thorne had spent twenty years searching.
