Chapter 16 - Bianca’s Letter

Bianca wrote six pages.

I read them once.

Then again a week later.

She admitted Preston had told her repeatedly the timing was impossible.

She attacked me anyway because:

“I needed a reason that made my hatred feel righteous.”

That sentence was accurate.

She hated that I had once been Preston’s wife.

Hated that he still felt guilty.

Hated that staff sometimes liked me.

Hated my refusal to act ashamed of being a maid.

And when Malcolm ordered her to find bracelet, she had an official reason to invade my room.

The pregnancy test gave her emotional permission.

She wrote:

At the cemetery I wanted you frightened enough to give me the bracelet. When you said the baby was not Preston’s, I knew I had gone too far and kept going because stopping would mean admitting it.

Again.

Accurate.

Then:

When Dante arrived, I was not afraid because he was the father. I was afraid because I knew my father had spent months trying to prevent him from finding Eleanor.

That matched evidence.

She did not ask forgiveness.

She asked one question.

Did the bracelet survive?

I almost laughed.

I wrote back one sentence through Naomi.

Yes.

No more.

Bianca and Preston’s divorce finalized.

She retained substantial personal wealth separate from father.

She moved to Boston.

Started therapy according to her lawyer, though none of my business.

She never entered politics.

No redemption campaign.

Good.

Preston remarried? Too soon. No need.

He worked in nonprofit finance in Raleigh after cooperating and rebuilding career at lower level.

He never contacted me again.

Also good.

The senator’s conviction survived initial post-trial motions.

Appeal pending.

We waited.

Moretti Meridian’s restitution program verified 126 families affected by Saint Gabriel displacement or failed construction.

Dante personally contributed $8 million from inherited assets.

Some relatives sued him claiming he misused family holdings.

The case settled when corporate governance showed funds were his personally controlled share, not theirs.

He sold a yacht.

I laughed.

“You had a yacht?”

“Technically.”

“How do you technically have a yacht?”

“Very boringly.”

“Good. Sell another.”

“I have no more.”

“Tragic.”

He smiled.

The public began treating Dante as reformer.

He hated that almost as much as old mafia-boss mythology.

“I’m not heroic for returning stolen value.”

“Correct.”

“You could pretend.”

“No.”

Nora took first steps at thirteen months.

Toward Dante.

He cried.

I took video.

He threatened to buy my silence.

I threatened to show Rafael.

We were becoming a family.

Not because courts said.

Because ordinary jokes returned.

Then Helen Reed, my aunt, called.

She had found another box from my father Samuel.

Inside was a photograph of Eleanor holding me as newborn.

Beside her:

Isabella Moretti.

Alive.

Twenty years? Wait Isabella died when Mara 7, so yes she knew Mara as child. In photo when Mara newborn 27 years ago, Isabella alive. That meant relationship longer than we knew.

On the back Isabella wrote:

For Mara, who deserves a world cleaner than the one we built.

I gave copy to Dante.

He stared.

“She held you.”

“I guess.”

“So my mother knew you.”

“Yes.”

A strange tenderness entered room.

Not blood.

History.

Our daughter Nora connected two women who once tried to expose our families’ sins, but not by destiny.

May you like

By coincidence and choice.

That was enough.
