Chapter 8 - Locker 3187

Federal agents opened Locker 3187 with a warrant.
The brass key helped authenticate the old chain of custody history but was not enough by itself.
Inside were fourteen banker boxes.
Campaign files.
Property records.
Correspondence.
Old legal invoices.
Photographs.
One sealed envelope labeled:
MORETTI / SAINT GABRIEL — DO NOT DIGITIZE.
That phrase alone suggested someone knew records were dangerous.
The evidence review took weeks.
We did not get instant answers.
Meanwhile, Senator Thorne’s attorneys claimed the locker contained privileged legal materials.
A court appointed filter team separated protected communications from evidence potentially subject to seizure.
Slow.
Frustrating.
Real.
During that time, Bianca’s assault case advanced.
The prosecutor offered plea discussions.
She refused.
Her lawyer argued she had reacted emotionally to believed adultery.
Naomi informed them evidence showed Bianca knew Preston denied paternity and had been tasked with taking the bracelet.
The story changed.
Bianca’s attorney became interested in resolution.
Still no plea.
Dante’s father’s old companies also surfaced.
Moretti Infrastructure Holdings had received $6.8 million from Saint Gabriel Renewal Fund for drainage and foundations never fully built.
Two Thorne donor companies acquired defaulted properties afterward.
Isabella’s ledger matched bank records in Locker 3187.
Not perfectly.
Enough.
Then investigators found a letter from Malcolm Thorne to Lorenzo Moretti.
Twenty years old.
Your wife is becoming a liability. Eleanor too. Handle your side. I will handle mine.
Dante read through his attorney.
He went silent for a full minute.
Then:
“My father.”
The next letter was Lorenzo’s response.
I will speak to Isabella. No one touches her.
That complicated.
Thorne wanted liability handled.
Lorenzo claimed no violence.
Then a third document:
Payment from a Moretti company to Rourke Industrial Cleanup one day before the warehouse fire.
Description:
Emergency records disposal.
Rourke.
A name.
Investigators traced.
Company owner at time:
Gavin Rourke.
Alive.
Seventy four.
Living in Florida.
Dante knew him.
“My father’s fixer.”
“Did he work for Thorne?”
“Everyone worked for anyone who paid.”
Federal agents interviewed him.
He denied memory.
Then his lawyer contacted them three days later.
Rourke wanted immunity discussions.
Dante looked sick when he heard.
“What do you think he’ll say?”
“I don’t know.”
He did.
That was fear.
Rourke eventually told investigators:
Lorenzo ordered him to retrieve Isabella’s copied ledgers.
No violence.
Malcolm Thorne separately ordered destruction of documents at warehouse if recovery failed.
Rourke sent two men.
They confronted Isabella.
She locked herself in records office.
One man used accelerant? We should not give operational details. Simply "set a fire to destroy records". Fire spread faster than intended.
Isabella died.
Lorenzo did not order her death.
But his retrieval order put men there.
Malcolm ordered destruction.
Rourke helped cover it.
Afterward Lorenzo learned the truth and agreed with Malcolm to maintain accident story to protect family and business.
Then Lorenzo told eighteen year old Dante:
“Thorne killed your mother.”
Technically incomplete.
He omitted his own role.
Dante left the interview room and vomited.
I found him later sitting on courthouse steps.
“My father didn’t kill her.”
“No.”
“He sent them.”
“Yes.”
“He could have told truth.”
“Yes.”
“He let me worship him for fifteen years after.”
I sat beside him.
He whispered:
“If I protect his name now, I become him.”
There was Eleanor’s letter.
Do not become him.
Dante decided to cooperate fully.
Moretti Meridian opened historical archives voluntarily under counsel.
He publicly acknowledged evidence that predecessor companies participated in Saint Gabriel fraud.
His board hated it.
Investors panicked.
His family threatened lawsuits.
He did it anyway.
That was the day I began trusting him.
May you like
Not because he was powerful.
Because he chose truth when it damaged him.
