Chapter 21 - Dante’s Father
Moretti Meridian voted to rename its founding conference center.
It had been Lorenzo Moretti Hall.
Dante proposed:
Saint Gabriel Center for Ethics and Governance.
His cousins called performative.
Maybe partly.
Boards love symbolism.
But he also changed governance:
Independent audit committee.
Family related transactions reviewed externally.
Whistleblower protections.
Historical archives accessible to researchers after legal redaction.
Real structural change.
He told me:
“I can’t change my father.”
“No.”
“I can change what his name buys.”
That was good.
Then one cousin filed suit claiming Dante defamed Lorenzo by publishing historical report.
The case was dismissed largely because report relied on documented facts and protected disclosures.
Another legal loose end closed.
Dante stopped wearing his father’s signet ring.
Not dramatic.
He put it in safe.
Nora found empty mark on his finger.
“Where ring?”
“Put away.”
“Why?”
“It belonged to Grandpa Lorenzo.”
“Was he bad?”
Dante looked at me.
We had practiced.
“He did some bad things.”
“Is he dead?”
“Yes.”
“Can dead people say sorry?”
“No.”
“That’s sad.”
“Yes.”
She ran off.
