Chapter 24 - The Phone in the Drawer

I kept the original bathroom video for nine years.
Not on my phone.
Evidence archive.
Encrypted drive in lawyer’s storage.
One copy with law enforcement case file.
I never watched after criminal case.
Then Maya emailed:
“The civil retention need is over. You can keep or destroy your personal archive copy.”
I stared.
Ava was nine.
Old enough to know broad truth.
Not old enough to watch herself in danger.
Maybe never necessary.
I asked Ethan.
Not because permission.
Because co parent.
“I’m destroying my personal copy.”
He went quiet.
“Okay.”
“You want one?”
“No.”
That surprised.
“Why?”
“I know what I did.”
Amanda did not ask.
Grace said:
“Burn it.”
I laughed.
“Digital.”
“Delete aggressively.”
We met Maya at office.
She confirmed official court/law enforcement records remained as required, but my private redundant copy could be destroyed.
I deleted.
No ceremony.
Then emptied encrypted archive.
The bathroom video stopped being something I carried.
Evidence had done its job.
The truth no longer depended on my keeping a glowing red timer forever.
That night Ava took a bath.
At nine.
Door locked? No.
She sang loudly.
I sat downstairs reading.
For a second water sound triggered memory.
Then she shouted:
“Mom! Shampoo!”
I brought it.
She rolled eyes.
“You’re hovering.”
“Correct.”
“Go.”
I smiled.
“Okay.”
I left.

She was old enough to bathe safely.
Time had moved.
