Chapter 20 - Grace Leaves

Grace graduated nursing school when Ava was five.
Pediatric unit.
She came to tell us in person.
Ava cried.
“You’re leaving?”
“I’m not disappearing.”
“You can’t be my nanny if nurse?”
“I can be your Grace.”
Ava considered.
“Okay.”
We threw her a party.
Not huge.
Cupcakes.
Dr. Carter came.
Megan.
Grace’s sister.
I gave her framed photograph of a sunrise over Potomac, not Ava in bathtub, not trauma.
She laughed.
“Thank you for not making my career about that day.”
Exactly.
Grace had become more than witness.
So had I.
When she left, I hired no full time nanny.
Ava started kindergarten.
After school program.
My mother moved nearby for part year? We haven't mentioned Claire's mother. Let's not.
I adjusted work.
Not perfectly.
One Wednesday I missed pickup due traffic.
School called.
I panicked.
Then laughed at myself.
A normal parenting mistake.
No one built a custody file.
That mattered.
Ethan’s visits became unsupervised daytime when Ava was six after therapist and court review.
I hated first one.
He took her to zoo.
I checked phone fourteen times.
No emergency.
Ava returned holding plastic giraffe.
“Daddy let me pick.”
Good.
Still no overnight.
Not yet.
He asked six months later.
Court evaluator recommended one overnight monthly after home inspection and therapy.
I agreed reluctantly.
Not because forgiveness.
Because evidence.
Ava slept safely.
He sent one message:
She asked for water at 2 a.m. All good.
I smiled.
Then deleted nothing? No need.
