Chapter 17 - Amanda Asks for Nothing
Amanda completed probation two years after incident.
Her attorney sent one final letter.
Not asking access.
Not asking forgiveness.
It said:
I will not contact Claire or Ava unless Claire initiates. I have completed every court condition. I understand that completing conditions does not entitle me to relationship.
That sentence surprised me.
I let Grace read? No reason. I read alone.
Then Amanda wrote:
I spent years believing motherhood gave me permanent authority over Ethan. When Claire became his wife, I treated her boundaries as theft. When Ava was born, I saw another Bennett before I saw a child.
That was honest.
Then:
The bath was the worst thing I did because I knew Ava was helpless and still decided the plan mattered more for several seconds.
No minimizing.
I filed it.
Did not respond.
Ava was two.
She knew “Grandma Amanda” only from one photograph tucked inside a family album.
I did not erase Amanda from history.
I did not create relationship either.
One day Ava pointed.
“Who?”
“Daddy’s mom.”
“Grandma?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Lives somewhere else.”
That was enough at two.
Ethan was nearing release.
Family court required reentry plan.
Therapeutic supervised visits.
Not my home.
No Amanda.
No discussion of litigation.
He completed parenting program.
His therapist reported improved insight but warned accountability could fluctuate under stress.
Good.
No one said cured.
At first visit, Ava did not recognize him.
That broke him.
He cried.
Ava cried because strange man cried.
Supervisor redirected.
Second visit better.
He played blocks.
Third, bubbles.
He did not ask her to call him Daddy.
That mattered.
By sixth visit she did.
I cried in car afterward.
Not because I wanted Ethan back.
