Ethan considered appealing the custody order.
His new lawyer advised against.
Not because impossible.
Because facts poor and order allowed future modification based on progress.
He chose not to appeal.
That was first major choice I saw him make that did not escalate conflict.
Instead, he petitioned a year later for expanded supervised time.
I did not oppose modest increase.
Maya asked:
“Why?”
“He’s complied.”
“You trust?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“Orders can respond to evidence.”
Same principle.
Visits expanded to four hours weekly supervised at family center.
No overnights.
Ava enjoyed.
Ethan held stable job at a construction estimating firm after release.
No ownership.
No borrowing.
His restitution to bank/company creditors continued.
He paid child support.
No missed months first year.
Then one missed.
He told court in advance after job hours cut.
Caught up.
Responsibility is boring.
Good.
Amanda remained no contact.
Ethan did not sneak her into visits.
Good.
One day he emailed me through parenting app:
Mom has asked whether she can send Ava a book. I told her no unless you approve.
I stared.
Two years earlier he would have brought it and called me controlling.
Now he asked.
I answered:
Not yet. Thank you for checking.
No fight.
Progress.
Then Ava’s third birthday arrived.
Grace came.
Dr. Carter sent card.
Megan brought cake.
Ethan had separate supervised party earlier.
No combined performance.
At bedtime Ava asked:
“Why Daddy not live here?”
“Mommy and Daddy live in different houses.”
“Why?”
“Because we couldn’t be safe and kind living together.”
