Chapter 16 - Grace Tells Me the Missing Part

Grace waited almost a year to tell me something.

We were in my kitchen.

Ava was thirteen months old, throwing blueberries onto the floor.

Grace said:

“I lied once.”

I froze.

“About what?”

“The bathroom.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Not the event.”

“Then?”

“Why I went upstairs.”

I stared.

“Ethan texted towels.”

“Yes.”

“But?”

“I already suspected something.”

“What?”

“I saw Amanda carrying the phone up.”

“Why suspicious?”

“She never filmed baths.”

“How would you know?”

“I’d been there weeks. She filmed feeding, outfits, everything. Never bath.”

“So?”

“I followed earlier than Ethan expected.”

My pulse changed.

“How much earlier?”

“Maybe thirty seconds.”

“That’s why Amanda wasn’t ready?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you say?”

“I was afraid they’d say I invaded privacy.”

“Grace.”

“I thought the video proved enough.”

It did.

But her choice explained why timing had gone wrong.

Ethan planned Grace to arrive after a particular moment.

She came early because instincts.

That may have shortened Ava’s unattended exposure.

“Did you hear anything before entering?”

Grace nodded.

“What?”

“Ethan said, ‘Once she reaches for the baby, Mom, start yelling.’”

My skin went cold.

This fit.

They intended final edit to begin with Grace already handling Ava while Amanda accused her.

“Why didn’t recording catch?”

“It probably did before running water got loud.”

We reviewed audio with forensic enhancement.

There.

Faint.

Ethan:

“Once she reaches…”

Then water.

Not necessary for conviction.

Confirmed.

Grace cried.

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

She looked hurt.

I continued:

“But I understand why you were scared.”

“I don’t want you to think I’m brave.”

“I don’t care if you were brave. You moved.”

She laughed through tears.

That was enough.

Her disclosure taught me something.

Even good witnesses hold pieces back when they fear judgment.

Not always sinister.

Sometimes shame.

We amended statement through proper channels.

No case reopened.

The plea already encompassed staging.

Just fuller record.

Ava threw another blueberry.

Grace picked it up.

“See? Negligent.”

May you like

I laughed.

Life returning.
