Chapter 9 - The Locks

The temporary possession order became more stable after the evidentiary hearing.

Hera argued I had overreacted to a bucket of water.

The judge answered:

“This court is not deciding divorce based on water. We are deciding temporary possession based on trust ownership, revoked occupancy, conflict, and risk of continued confrontation.”

Hera was given a scheduled six hour period to retrieve remaining belongings with a neutral property supervisor.

He arrived with Lana.

The supervisor said only Hera.

Lana became furious.

“I helped decorate this house.”

I watched through camera from Rachel’s office.

Not because I was hiding.

Because she advised separation.

Hera packed.

He took clothing.

Electronics.

Golf clubs.

Books.

Personal photographs.

Then he tried to take an antique sideboard.

Supervisor stopped him.

“My wife doesn’t even like that.”

It had belonged to my grandmother.

He knew.

“No.”

He moved on.

He took a television we purchased jointly.

Allowed pending inventory.

He left his key.

Security system reset.

Locks changed afterward because trust authorized.

Garage remotes reprogrammed.

Not as revenge.

Access control.

The first night alone, I slept badly.

At 5:03 a.m., I woke without alarm.

My body remembered before my brain did.

No water.

No Hera.

Only quiet.

I sat on edge of bed until sunrise.

Then made myself pancakes.

One serving.

No bacon.

I ate at kitchen counter.

It was the first breakfast I cooked because I wanted to in years.

Then Rachel called.

“Michelle wants formal cooperation agreement.”

“What does that mean?”

“She wants to provide documents in exchange for us limiting civil claims against her.”

“Do we?”

“Depends value.”

“What does she have?”

“A voice memo.”

I closed eyes.

“Of Hera?”

“Yes.”

“Why did she record him?”

“Because apparently your entire former family trusted nobody.”

Not former legally yet.

Emotionally.

“Yes.”

The recording happened five days before my birthday.

Hera:

If she refuses, Mom stays here.

Michelle:

Azalea will kick her out.

Hera:

Then Mom says she’s a tenant.

Michelle:

She isn’t.

Hera:

Doesn’t matter. It becomes another fight.

My stomach tightened.

They planned to manufacture occupancy conflict too.

Michelle:

Why are you doing this? Just divorce her.

Hera:

Because divorce without house money is stupid.

Silence.

Then Michelle:

You don’t own the house.

Hera:

I own the marriage.

I stopped audio.

Could not breathe.

Rachel paused.

“Want to stop?”

“No.”

Recording resumed.

Michelle:

What if she calls Rachel again?

Hera:

Then we make her look unstable.

Michelle:

How?

Hera:

She’s already dramatic. Birthday will help.

Michelle:

What are you doing on birthday?

Hera laughed.

Nothing specific.

But enough.

The bucket happened days later.

Was it preplanned?

Maybe.

No need prove.

He had already planned to use my birthday as pressure.

Then Michelle said:

“I’m not helping with that part.”

Hera:

You already made invoices.

Michelle:

That was supposed to scare her in divorce, not trap her in house.

Interesting.

Michelle had a boundary.

A low one.

Still.

It differentiated roles.

Rachel asked:

“Do you want to settle with Michelle?”

“What would that mean?”

“She admits creation of false invoices, repays any disputed marital funds she retained, cooperates in document authentication, stops using images of your property, and pays contribution to fees. In return you release certain civil claims. Criminal authorities remain independent.”

“Did she retain money?”

“Forensics now show the $3,000 cash withdrawal was given back to Hera. She did not keep the eighteen thousand. Her promised ten percent was never paid.”

“So what does she repay?”

“Possibly damages/fees, not the eighteen directly.”

I thought.

“Will she admit?”

“In writing.”

“Then yes, if reasonable.”

I did not want Michelle ruined.

I wanted truth locked in.

Her settlement became first formal admission.

She created eight false invoices.

Assisted Hera with three more.

Used my patio photograph.

Knew work was not performed by MJM.

Knew Hera intended to use invoices in marital dispute.

Did not know he would forge my approval.

Did not receive expected contingent payment.

Provided phone and cloud records voluntarily through counsel.

No contact with me except legal.

MJM dissolved.

Clean.

Then the district attorney’s financial crimes unit requested copies from court record.

Civil settlement did not stop them.

The story had entered another room.
