Chapter 22 - Michelle’s Real Business

Michelle rebuilt her career.

Not MJM.

Event planning.

Something she actually knew.

She worked for a hotel group.

No ownership.

No fake contractor invoices.

At forty, she completed probation and petitioned to seal or limit public visibility where law allowed? Misdemeanor may remain. We don't need legal detail. She moved on.

Her daughter graduated college later.

Her son started trade school.

I saw them occasionally.

Michelle and I did not become sisters.

We became civil.

Once at a family wedding, she said:

“I still can’t believe I made a slate roof invoice.”

I looked at her.

“I still can’t believe you used a photo of my patio as your own work.”

“That one actually looked good.”

“Because Bennett Outdoor built it.”

She laughed.

I did too.

That surprised both.

Then she became serious.

“Hera told me it was just negotiation.”

“You knew invoices were fake.”

“Yes.”

“Why did that sound acceptable?”

“Because I grew up watching Mom treat boundaries like insults.”

“Same excuse Hera used.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t use it.”

She nodded.

“Fair.”

No absolution.

But accountability without performance.

I respected that.

She asked:

“Did you ever find out why he picked exactly eighteen?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Enough to look like real capital contribution but low enough he thought I wouldn’t immediately hire forensic accountant.”

She frowned.

“I thought because Mom’s debt was seventeen eight.”

“That helped cover story.”

Hera had chosen amount because Lana’s debt made plausible explanation.

He also wanted three equal $6k transfers labelled house project.

The number did double duty.

That was the kind of manipulation that once would have made me doubt reality.

Now it seemed pathetic.

Michelle said:

“He used all of us.”

“Yes.”

“I used you too.”

“Yes.”

May you like

She did not ask forgiveness.

Progress.
