Chapter 24 - 5:03 Again

On my forty third birthday, I woke at 5:03 a.m.
No alarm.
Habit.
The room was dark.
I stared at clock.
Then laughed.
Five years.
I got out of bed.
Went downstairs.
Made coffee.
The kitchen was quiet.
The blue bucket was long gone.
Hera was not in my life beyond the occasional family update Lana chose not to over-share.
Michelle sent birthday text:
Happy birthday. No pancakes required.
I replied with one laughing emoji.
That was enough.
Lana mailed flowers.
Rachel sent:
If anyone wakes you with water, call someone else. I’m on vacation.
I smiled.
At seven, my cousin June arrived with breakfast.
She rang first.
Asked before coming.
Small things.
I had learned to notice them.
Permission.
Notice.
Choice.
The house had changed.
Not much physically.
Same hardwood.
Same kitchen.
Same bedroom windows.
But I stopped hosting every holiday.
Stopped keeping guest rooms permanently ready for people who never asked.
Converted one into library.
The other became studio.
When someone visited, they slept at hotel unless I invited otherwise.
No guilt.
In afternoon I walked through backyard.
Patio Michelle had falsely claimed to manage still looked beautiful.
I thought about fake slate roof.
Almost laughed again.
The ridiculousness of some evidence had saved me.
Had Hera chosen subtler fraud, case might have been harder.
But entitlement makes people careless.
He thought his story only needed to sound plausible to me.
He did not expect independent trustee.
Forensic accountant.
Judge.
Metadata.
Actual contractors.
He underestimated systems because he had spent years training one person to doubt herself.
Me.
That was his fundamental error.
I was no longer the only audience.
That evening, I opened grandmother’s framed note.
Azalea should never have to earn the right to feel at home in her own home.
I read once.
Then went downstairs for cake.
No dramatic revelation remained.
Tomorrow did not contain hidden lawsuit.
No secret creditor.
No third envelope.
Just life.
One chapter left.
May you like
Not because something new was coming.
Because endings deserve to say what stayed.
