Chapter 15 - The Signature

The forged signature analysis was straightforward.

The document examiner compared:

Insurance form bearing my genuine initials.

MJM invoice approval.

Digital file extracted from Hera’s laptop.

The approval was not handwritten.

It was a pasted image.

The same pixel pattern.

Same compression artifact.

Hera’s defense shifted.

He claimed:

“I inserted Azalea’s initials as a placeholder.”

The invoice, however, had been sent to Northfield without “draft” marking.

Cover email:

Beneficiary approval attached.

That killed placeholder argument.

Then prosecutors found an email from Hera to Michelle.

Hera:

Need A approval on two.

Michelle:

I don’t have her signature.

Hera:

I do.

No ambiguity.

Michelle replied:

Don’t do anything stupid.

Hera:

Relax.

That became key.

Hera’s criminal attorney approached prosecutors.

Plea discussions began.

I was consulted as affected party.

Laura Chen said:

“We’re considering a plea to one felony document/fraud offense and one misdemeanor count, restitution and no further claims, in exchange for dismissal of overlapping counts.”

“How much prison?”

“Guidelines, record, conduct, plea all matter. I cannot promise exact until judge.”

“First offense.”

“Yes.”

“Did he actually get money from me?”

“He took $18,000 marital funds, though division complicates ownership. He attempted to obtain a larger settlement but failed.”

“So less severe than if he stole $180,000.”

“Correct.”

I appreciated that she said it.

No sensational punishment.

I asked:

“What about Michelle?”

“Likely misdemeanor plea, probation, community service or fines, given cooperation and lesser role, subject to judge.”

“Lana?”

“No charge.”

“Good.”

Chen looked surprised.

“You don’t want her charged?”

“For what? Being awful?”

Exactly.

Law did not exist to punish every person who made my life miserable.

Hera eventually accepted plea.

Before sentencing, he wrote me a letter through counsel.

Rachel asked whether I wanted.

“Yes.”

Azalea,

I told myself I was protecting myself because the house was yours. The truth is I hated that there was something in our marriage I could not control.

I stopped.

There.

He continued.

Every time your grandmother’s trust reminded me I had no claim, I heard that I could be discarded.

Instead of telling you I was afraid, I tried to build a claim.

I used Michelle.

I lied to Mom.

I lied to you.

The birthday breakfast was supposed to pressure you into signing the postnup. The bucket was not planned. I was angry you were asleep while everyone was waiting on you.

That sentence told me he still had work.

Everyone was not waiting.

They had not arrived.

But entitlement remained.

He continued:

I know saying I was insecure does not excuse what I did. I made you afraid to leave because I was afraid you would.

That was probably truest line he ever wrote.

I did not answer.

Not yet.

The divorce decree came first.

My name stayed Azalea Morgan temporarily? User surname Morgan. Maybe she could return to Marlowe? We can later choose.

House remained untouched.

Trust confirmed.

Hera’s occupancy permanently terminated.

Property settlement approved.

No spousal support either direction.

Marital accounts divided after credits.

My share received the full $18,000 adjustment.

The birthday scheme did not cost me the house.

It cost Hera the marriage he was trying to control.
