Chapter 13 - The Grand Jury

Hera was indicted on limited financial counts.

Not everything prosecutors considered.

Forgery related to the false Azalea approval.

Attempted obtaining property by false pretenses tied to use of fabricated invoices in a claim for marital reimbursement.

A count involving falsified documents submitted in judicial proceedings.

Exact legal labels were less dramatic than family gossip made them.

No racketeering.

No organized crime.

No conspiracy empire.

Michelle was charged separately with a lesser falsification related offense because she knowingly created fake invoices.

Her cooperation mattered.

Lana was not charged.

The ice water incident resulted in a separate misdemeanor domestic assault complaint after I provided statement? Hera grabbed wrist and threw water. Prosecutor evaluated. The water itself could be assault depending law; I initially hadn't filed criminal complaint. Rachel said could report. I did because pattern? Let's handle carefully: I made report, but local prosecutor declined separate charge due no injury and overlapping domestic proceedings, documenting incident. Maybe better realism. The grabbing might qualify, but not every unpleasant act prosecuted. We'll say no separate criminal charge, but incident remained in civil protective/divorce record. Good.

Hera surrendered through attorney.

No dramatic raid.

He posted bond.

Conditions:

No harassment.

No destruction of evidence.

No contact with Michelle about testimony outside counsel.

He moved from Lana’s condo into a furnished apartment because Lana asked him to leave after discovering the money.

That surprised everyone.

Lana called me.

“I told him he can’t stay.”

“Okay.”

“You don’t care?”

“I’m not sure what you want.”

“He used me.”

“Yes.”

“I was his mother.”

“I was his wife.”

Silence.

Fair.

Then she said:

“I owe you an apology.”

“You owe me more than one sentence.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

I heard something different.

Maybe age.

Maybe consequences.

“Write it.”

“What?”

“If you mean it, write exactly what you did without explaining why I caused it.”

She went quiet.

Then:

“Okay.”

A week later, letter arrived through Rachel.

Azalea,

I treated your house as if my relationship to Hera gave me authority there. It did not.

I expected food, rooms, holidays, and access without asking.

When you objected, I called you selfish because that was easier than accepting no.

I helped Hera create pressure around the postnup even though I knew you had not asked for it.

I told him you needed to be humbled.

I did not know the invoices were false. That does not excuse the things I did know.

On your birthday, I expected you to cook breakfast because I believed you would.

That belief came from four years of watching everyone take from you and watching you keep peace.

I am sorry.

I read twice.

Did not cry.

Did not call.

I gave letter to Rachel to archive.

Maybe later.

Hera’s criminal case would take months.

Divorce too.

But one thing changed immediately.

He stopped calling me dramatic.

His lawyers probably told him.

Silence was better.

Then forensic accounting on our marital estate discovered another hidden account.

My stomach dropped when Rachel called.

“Before you panic, it’s not huge.”

“How much?”

“Twenty six thousand.”

“Whose?”

“Hera’s.”

“From where?”

“Opened three years ago. Mostly his bonuses.”

Separate account during marriage.

Not necessarily illegal.

But undisclosed.

“Anything connected to MJM?”

“Possibly.”

I almost laughed.

“What now?”

Rachel paused.

“Payments to Lana.”

My stomach tightened.

“He had been giving her money for years?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me.”

“Yes.”

Total over three years:

$38,400.

Not from the joint account.

From his hidden bonus account.

So why use our joint account for the eighteen?

Because he wanted a marital paper trail showing he invested joint money into Michelle’s “renovation company.”

The transfer itself was evidence for his future claim.

The eighteen thousand had been chosen not only to fund the scheme.

It was supposed to prove the scheme.

That was the twist I had missed.

He could have paid Michelle from his hidden account.

He deliberately used our joint one so he could later say:

See? Marital funds improved Azalea’s separate house.

May you like

The transaction was not an accident.

It was a prop.
