Chapter 7 - Learning Pain Was Allowed

For the first month after the porch, Noah asked permission for everything.
“Can I say it hurts?”
“Yes.”
“Can I use crutches now?”
“Yes.”
“Can I sit?”
“Yes.”
“Can I ask teacher to carry books?”
“Yes.”
Then one evening:
“Can I stop asking?”
I nearly laughed.
“Yes.”
Dr. Collins warned:
“Do not turn validation into constant monitoring.”
Meaning:
No:
How much pain?
Are toes okay?
Does cast feel tight?
Every ten minutes.
That can also teach body is emergency.
Follow medical schedule.
Trust him.
Then school.
Noah returned part-time.
Kids asked cast story.
I told counselor:
He chooses.
He said:
“I fell on porch.”
True enough.
One boy:
“Did your aunt tie you?”
Someone’s parent knew court.
Noah froze.
School addressed privacy/bullying.
No dramatic transfer.
Then cast removal six weeks later.
X-ray showed healing.
Doctor said gradual weight-bearing with guidance.
Physical therapy.
No permanent injury.
When cast saw removed, Noah looked at thin leg and cried.
“It looks broken.”
Doctor:
“Muscles get smaller when not used. That can recover.”
Then first steps with therapist.
He hesitated.
Not pain.
Memory.
Physical therapist Jake Morris asked:
“Want me or Claire nearby?”
“Claire.”
I stood.
He put weight gradually as medically allowed.
Nothing happened.
Then another step.
He smiled.
No one recorded.
That mattered.
At home, we returned crutches when no longer needed.
They were rental? Let's say hospital loaner.
No artifact.
Before returning, Noah asked:
“Can I break them?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because they belong medical equipment company.”
He laughed.
Ordinary rule.
Then:
“I hate them.”
“Okay.”
“You?”
“I hate what Linda did with them. Crutches did their job.”
He thought.
Then nodded.
Objects.
Then Linda prison letters.
First through attorney:
I am sorry.
I did not give Noah.
Therapist recommended wait until he asks.
At twelve, he did.
“Does Linda ever write?”
“Yes.”
“Can I see?”
We reviewed one.
Linda:
I was wrong to make you stand. I was wrong to tie you. I was wrong to call your pain fake. I was wrong to use your fear to try to prove something about Claire.
Direct.
Then:
You do not owe me forgiveness or contact.
No excuse.
No trust money.
No “I love you so much.”
No request.
Noah read.
Then:
“Does she still think Claire bad guardian?”
I said:
“I don’t know.”
Then:
“She thought you were too young.”
“Maybe.”
He looked.
“You are kind of young.”
I laughed.
“Thanks.”
Then:
“But you’re good.”
That was enough.
He did not respond.
Linda respected.
Then her release after twenty-eight months.
Supervision.
No contact.
She moved to neighboring state with adult daughter Emily Ross? We haven't introduced. Could simply live with friend. Not needed.
She worked bookkeeping? After conviction maybe regular admin not caregiving.
No new crimes.
Then probation officer contacted for potential restorative communication.
Noah thirteen.
He said no.
Fine.
At fifteen:
Maybe.
At sixteen:
“I want ask her one thing.”
“What?”
“Why she wanted be guardian so bad.”
May you like
We arranged mediated meeting.
That question would expose motive in words no court transcript quite captured.
