Chapter 14 - The Porch Was Sold

After Linda died, Emily sold house.
The wooden porch.
Screen door.
The hallway where crutches stood.
She asked:
“Do either of you want anything?”
No.
Noah:
“Definitely not robe.”
Dark humor.
Then house listed.
Sold to young couple.
No special.
I did not visit.
Noah did once with Emily before closing.
Why?
He wanted see.
Adult.
He stood on porch.
The chair was gone.
Screen door replaced.
Wood refinished.
He told me later:
“It looked smaller.”
Childhood fear changes scale.
Then:
“Did you cry?”
“No.”
“Feel?”
“Hungry.”
Classic.
Then:
“I thought I would hate porch.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Then he noticed hallway wall where crutches had leaned.
Just wall.
No mark.
Then left.
No need reclaim.
Property passed.
Then Emily gave us Linda’s notebook? Police returned after case. Linda had kept a copy? Wait original evidence might be returned after legal retention. Could exist. Emily found NOAH CARE LOG in stored legal box.
She asked what do.
I said:
“Ask Noah.”
He said:
“Destroy.”
We consulted no legal need. Cases final, official records retained.
Emily shredded.
No personal copy.
Then guardian petition papers.
Same.
Parents’ letter?
Ours.
Keep.
Noah wanted that.
Good.
Then he told Lucy when older? Not yet.
At age five, Lucy broke arm on playground.
Life circled.
Noah called me from ER.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“She has cast.”
I froze.
Then heard him laugh.
“Pink.”
I exhaled.
“What doctor say?”
“Normal fracture. Sling. No drama.”
Then:
“Do you need me?”
Pause.
“Yes.”
I went.
Not because emergency.
Because asked.
At home Lucy complained cast itchy.
Noah listened.
Did not call fake.
Did not panic.
Called clinic when needed.
Followed.
Crutches not needed.
Then he said later:
“I thought I’d freak.”
“You didn’t.”
“I checked fingers too much first day.”
“Reasonable.”
Grace:
“Very much.”
We laughed.
Trauma did not make him doomed.
May you like
It made some moments louder.
Then quiet again.
