Chapter 18 - Claire’s Marriage

Evan Brooks entered my life when Noah was seventeen.
I met him through hospital renovation project.
He was thirty-eight, structural engineer.
I was thirty-three.
Slow.
No savior.
Noah suspicious.
“Does he know about Linda?”
“Yes.”
“Does he think I’m messed up?”
“No.”
“Did you ask?”
“Yes.”
At twenty, Noah relaxed.
When Evan proposed, I told Noah before announcement.
Not ask permission.
Inform.
He said:
“Do I have to call him Dad?”
We both laughed.
“No.”
“Good.”
Then wedding.
Linda still alive and relationship limited. Noah wanted her invited to ceremony? By then around 21 maybe, and she had maintained boundaries. I chose no because my own relationship with her not ready.
She accepted.
No guilt.
Years later she attended Thanksgiving.
Enough.
Evan never tried to become authority over Noah.
He said:
“He has sister. I'm guy married to sister.”
Perfect.
Then I sometimes overworked.
He told:
“You don’t have to keep proving guardianship.”
That landed.
I had built identity around never failing.
Even after Noah adult.
I learned to rest.
Travel.
Make mistakes.
Then when Evan had knee surgery, he used crutches.
First day they leaned behind door.
I froze.
He noticed.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Want move?”
“No.”
I left.
A week later I forgot they were there.
Brain updates.
Then when he no longer needed, he returned.
Objects.
Then Evan and Noah developed their own relation.
Baseball? Noah not sports. They played chess badly.
No trauma.
Then Evan once asked:
“Do you think Linda changed?”
“Yes.”
“Do people deserve second chances?”
“Sometimes.”
“Who decides?”
May you like
“The person giving access.”
Good.
