Chapter 15 - The Guardian Who Wasn’t Needed Anymore

When Noah turned thirty-five, he had been legally independent seventeen years.

Yet I still sometimes introduced:

“My little brother.”

He hated “little.”

Then one day:

“You know you’re not my guardian anymore.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Mostly.”

He smiled.

Then he and Grace asked me to be Lucy’s emergency guardian nomination if both died.

I stared.

“Are you sure?”

Noah:

“You did okay first time.”

I cried.

Then:

“I’m older now.”

“Forty-three, not fossil.”

Actually Claire26 +25? Noah35 means 25 years later, Claire51. Right. So she is 51. Fine.

“Fifty-one.”

“Still.”

Then:

“Why me?”

“Because you ask.”

That word.

Linda assumed.

I ask.

Then:

“And because you know guardian isn't owner.”

I cried more.

We met estate attorney.

Proper plan.

Backups.

Independent trustee for Lucy if needed.

No family improvisation.

No prophecy.

Hopefully never used.

Then I said:

“Do not make me primary if I’m seventy when relevant.”

Noah laughed.

Plan can update.

Then I told him:

“Mom and Dad choosing me changed my life.”

“Regret?”

“No.”

Then:

“Cost?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“Thank you.”

That was enough.

Then my marriage to Evan? We haven't fleshed. Let's place Claire married Evan at 36, still together. No children maybe by choice. Lucy loves him as Uncle Evan.

He had watched me overprotect Noah sometimes and said:

“You can be sister.”

I learned.

Then Evan died later? Could remain. Not needed yet.

But full closure maybe mention.

Then life:

Career changed.

Claire became operations manager at hospital.

Retired at 62.

No dramatic success.

No revenge brand.

Then parent's trust ended.

Linda estate ended.

Guardianship ended.

Criminal cases ended.

What remained?

Family memory.

Then Noah found old crossbody bag I wore porch, stored.

“Throw this away.”

“Why?”

“It’s ugly.”

He was right.

I donated.

Objects.

May you like

Then he gifted nicer bag earlier. I used.

No symbol.
