Chapter 24 - The Last File

At seventy-four, I opened final family archive.
Parents:
Death certificates.
Will.
Letter.
Noah trust closure.
My old guardianship order.
I called Noah.
“Want guardianship order?”
“No.”
“Parents’ letter?”
“Yes.”
We scanned and gave original? He wanted.
I mailed.
Then guardianship order can shred copy; official record remains.
He read letter again.
Noah is not a prize.
He texted:
They were smart.
Yes.
Then I looked at photograph of me twenty-three holding seven-year-old Noah outside courthouse after guardianship.
I looked terrified.
He looked small.
Linda visible in background.
Expression unreadable.
I could crop.
Didn’t.
Family history includes.
Then I found photo of blue cast, school signatures.
Kept digital.
No porch photos.
No sash.
No evidence.
Then I wrote one sentence on archive note:
All legal and financial matters closed.
Because I liked closure.
Then final checks:
Linda sentence completed before death.
Probation completed.
Restitution paid.
Protective/no-contact orders expired.
Guardianship petition dismissed.
Claire remained guardian until Noah 18.
Standby arrangement never used.
Bennett Survivor Trust administered/terminated.
No misappropriation.
No civil claim open.
Parents’ estate long closed.
Linda estate closed.
Evan estate closed.
No unresolved medical injury.
Clean.
Then Noah called:
“Why are you auditing our childhood?”
“Because I’m old.”
“You’re seventy-four.”
“Exactly.”
Then:
“Burn everything.”
“Not parents’ letter.”
“Fine.”
Then:
“You know I remember enough without paperwork.”
May you like
I did.
We closed.
