Chapter 20 - The Criminal Trial Begins

Damian refused a plea offer that would have required admitting forgery.
He could not stand that word.
He insisted Chloe signed willingly.
Trial began fourteen months after rescue.
I testified only about kitchen discovery and what I personally observed.
Prosecutor:
“What was Chloe doing when you entered?”
“Eating food from dirty plates while kneeling on floor.”
“Did Mr. Prescott say anything?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“She deserves it.”
Defense objected to context? Overruled where relevant to abuse.
On cross:
“Mrs. Miller, you disliked Damian before that night?”
“No.”
“You were suspicious?”
“I was becoming suspicious.”
“You entered through service door without permission?”
“Yes.”
“You did not call police before entering?”
“No.”
“You slapped Mr. Prescott?”
“No.”
“You struck his hand when he grabbed Chloe?”
“Yes.”
“You threatened him?”
“I told him legal consequences would follow if he touched her again.”
No exaggeration.
