Chapter 12 - The Contract Susan Almost Missed
The white envelope had one folded sheet tucked inside the back flap.
Susan discovered it a week later while indexing copies.
A handwritten amendment to the marriage’s postnuptial financial agreement.
There was no formal postnup we knew of.
The paper said:
Chloe acknowledged that all labor provided to The Hearth was part of “marital contribution” and waived claims for salary, overtime, or ownership.
It also said:
Any funds transferred by Chloe to Prescott Hospitality were “irrevocable marital gifts.”

Witness:
Damian’s restaurant manager.
Date:
Three months earlier.
Chloe remembered that night.
Damian had kept her at restaurant until nearly four in morning.
He told her an investor required “spousal acknowledgment.”
She signed.
Could the waiver eliminate wage claims?
Not necessarily.
Employees cannot always waive statutory wage rights privately, especially retroactively or under coercion.
Could it convert $140,000 to gift?
That would depend on intent and enforceability.
Susan smiled for first time in days.
“Damian thinks contracts are spells.”
“What?”
“He thinks putting words on paper makes illegal or coerced conduct legal.”
The manager who witnessed, Trevor Lane, later testified Chloe looked exhausted and asked:
“Can I go home after this?”
He did not know contents.
He regretted signing.
