Chapter 17 - Gloria Goes to Trial

Gloria refused plea.
She wanted vindication.
Trial began fourteen months after rescue.
Lizzy was seven.
Prosecutors did not make her testify live.
The court admitted portions of properly conducted forensic interview under applicable rules, with defense opportunities through process.
Dr. Reid testified.
Dehydration.
Weight loss.
Iron deficiency.
Inadequate nutrition.
No permanent organ injury.
He refused prosecution’s invitation to speculate beyond records.
Good.
School attendance officer testified.
Elaine Porter explained trust.
Bank fraud analyst explained signatures.
Forensic examiner explained copied signature.
Deputy Mills described closet.
Walt testified.
Defense attacked him as husband saving himself.
He admitted benefit.
Then text messages confirmed.
I testified last.
Gloria watched me.
Not crying.
Not glaring.
Evaluating.
Like I was still child she could correct later.
Prosecutor asked:
“Why did you enter house?”
“Lizzy called.”
“What did she say?”
“Please help me. They locked me in. I’m hungry. I’m scared.”
“Why did you return later?”
“With deputy to retrieve medical and identity documents.”
“What did you find?”
“Financial records.”
“Did you sign these withdrawal authorizations?”
“No.”
All three displayed.
“No.”
“No.”
“No.”
Defense cross:
“You resented your mother becoming Lizzy’s guardian.”
“No.”
“You thought Ian should choose you.”
“No.”
“You broke into house.”
“Yes.”
“You photographed private records.”
“With deputy present.”
“You wanted custody.”
“After I found Lizzy.”
“Your husband has no children, correct?”
Adam and I had chosen not to have children yet? Let's define. We hadn't discussed. Could avoid. Counsel trying motive maybe. I answered:
“We do not have children.”
“And now you have Lizzy.”
“I have temporary responsibility for my niece because she needed safe home.”
No drama.
Then defense asked:
“Isn’t it true Gloria told you Lizzy had behavioral food issues?”
“Yes.”
“And you believed?”
“For a while.”
“So my client’s descriptions appeared credible.”
May you like
“Until I found a hungry child locked in closet.”
Silence.
