Chapter 24 - The Last Court Date
The final restitution hearing happened almost four years after the patio.
Emma did not attend.
She was at school.
Exactly where she should be.
The judge approved final accounting.
Professional custodian confirmed Emma’s funds were protected.
All known unauthorized transfers had been resolved through restitution and adjustments.
No hidden account.
No missing final withdrawal.
No further financial case pending.
Rachel had completed incarceration, probation requirements, counseling, and most restitution.
She lived two counties away after divorcing Derek.
Tyler primarily lived with Derek.
Rachel had supervised contact with him until family court gradually expanded based on his welfare.
Her relationship with Emma remained nonexistent.
Mom completed her sentence and probation.
She and Dad divorced.
She lived in a small condo outside Dayton near a cousin.
She sent Emma two letters through counsel.
Emma declined both.
Dad remained nearby.
He saw Emma several times a year with her consent.
Never alone at first.
Later, when Emma was fifteen, she allowed him to take her to lunch.
Trust did not return because he was her grandfather.
It returned because he learned to accept no without punishment.
After the final hearing, Laura closed her file.
“Congratulations.”
“That feels strange.”
“Why?”
“Because nobody won.”
She smiled.
“That is often what closure feels like.”
Outside courthouse, Dad waited near steps.
“I heard it’s finished.”
“Yes.”
“Emma’s money?”
“Protected.”
“Good.”
He looked older.
“Can I ask something?”
“What?”
“Do you forgive me?”
I thought.
“No.”
He nodded.
Then I added:
“But I don’t hate you.”
His eyes filled.
“That’s more than I deserve.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I’m done deciding what people deserve. I decide what is safe.”
