Chapter 17 - The Hearing
Rachel’s criminal hearing began six months after the patio.
Emma did not sit through everything.
Her therapist and victim advocate helped minimize exposure.
The video was authenticated.
Rachel’s attorney cross examined Nate.
“You did not see both hands contact Emma?”
“No.”
“You were partially obstructed?”
“Yes.”
Good.
No exaggeration.
Then Tyler testified in a closed or protected setting appropriate for a child.
He said:
“My mom told Emma to listen.”
“Then?”
“She grabbed her.”
“Did Emma kick?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“I was looking.”
“Why didn’t you tell Deputy Harris immediately?”
“Grandma told me Mom could go to jail.”
“Did that scare you?”
“Yes.”
“Did anyone tell you what to say today?”
“No.”
Rachel cried while her son spoke.
I felt no victory.
