The financial accounting produced a stack of “educational reimbursement” documents.
Several included Emma’s childish signature.
Not consent.
Acknowledgment.
Diane had asked Emma to sign forms stating she had “received benefit” from expenses.
Emma thought they were college paperwork.
One listed:
ART ENRICHMENT PROGRAM — $6,200.
Emma had attended a three week community art camp that cost $280.
The $6,200 transfer went to Rachel.
Another:
PRIVATE ACADEMIC SUPPORT — $14,200.
That was Tyler’s tuition.
Emma’s signature appeared at bottom.
She had been eight.
Laura stared at the page.
“This does not legally make the withdrawal appropriate.”
“I know.”
“But it shows Diane tried to create a record.”
A forensic review found one invoice for a nonexistent enrichment company had been created on a computer registered to Rachel’s boutique office.
That moved Rachel from beneficiary to potential participant.
The white collar prosecutor asked questions.
Rachel’s lawyer immediately blamed Diane.
Diane’s lawyer blamed misunderstanding.
