Chapter 10 - Rachel’s Price
Tyler’s father Derek Bennett hired a lawyer for him independent of Rachel.
Derek and Rachel’s marriage had been strained before the incident.
Now it cracked.
Derek allowed Tyler to speak with a child interviewer.
Tyler said:
The morning of the cookout, Rachel complained Emma was “turning into Claire.”
Mom Diane said:
“Then we fix it before Claire makes her impossible.”
Rachel said she would make Emma share the tablet.
Diane told Martin to make sure the patio camera was off because:
“I’m not having Claire replay family conversations like evidence.”
No one discussed pushing Emma.
No one discussed injury.
That distinction mattered.
The confrontation was planned.
The violence was not proven planned.
Tyler also said he saw the shove.
From the lawn.
He had not spoken because Grandma pulled him inside afterward and said:
“You saw Emma kick your mother.”
Tyler replied:
“I didn’t.”
Diane said:
“Then you weren’t looking.”
That sentence became important.
Not legally dramatic by itself.
Emotionally devastating.
My mother had attempted to give a child his memory.
Tyler resisted.
He was spoiled.
He was not dishonest.
That mattered.
Rachel’s criminal attorney learned Tyler had spoken.
Two days later, Rachel called Derek screaming.
He recorded? Let's not make everything recorded. He summarized to his counsel.
Rachel accused him of “turning our son against me.”
Derek filed for temporary parenting orders.
Their marriage began divorce proceedings within weeks.
