Chapter 21 - Dad Leaves

Dad filed for divorce.
Mom called it betrayal.
He called it forty one years late.
The house went on market because neither wanted nor could comfortably maintain it alone while restitution questions loomed.
Dad offered his share of certain proceeds toward restoring Emma’s account.
Laura asked me:
“Do you want that?”
“It belongs to Emma.”
“Then we pursue full lawful restoration from responsible parties, not guilt payments without structure.”
A court appointed successor custodian took over Emma’s remaining account.
No one in my immediate family controlled it.
Professional management.
Reporting.
Transparency.
That felt safer.
Dad asked for one thing.
“Can I send Emma letters?”
I asked Emma.
She said:
“Can Laura read first?”
“Yes.”
“Then okay.”
No forced calls.
No visits.
Letters.
Dad wrote once a month.
Not:
I miss you, please forgive me.
Instead:
I am sorry I did not protect you.
I am sorry I told you to change your story.
You did nothing wrong.
Emma read some.
May you like
Ignored others.
That was her right.
