Chapter 18 - The Witness Nobody Expected

Tyler asked to see Emma.
I said no initially.
Emma decided differently.
“Can he come?”
“Do you want him?”
“For ten minutes.”
We met in Dr. Chen’s office.
Neutral.
Tyler looked like a child again.
Not Rachel’s son.
Not witness.
Twelve.
He sat across.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma looked at him.
“For what?”
“The tablet.”
“And?”
“For laughing.”
“And?”
“For not telling.”
He swallowed.
“And for thinking Grandma was right because she said you have more than me.”
Emma’s face changed.
“I don’t.”
“I know.”
“No, you have two parents.”
Tyler went silent.
Emma’s father was dead.
That one sentence corrected every balance sheet my family had ever created.
Tyler whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Emma said:
“I’m still mad.”
“Okay.”
“You can’t use my tablet.”
“Okay.”
“Maybe later.”
May you like
He almost smiled.
That was enough.
