Chapter 22 - Claire’s Anger

I had spent years protecting Lily.

I forgot sometimes that I needed to heal too.

When Margaret met Lily, I became furious again.

Not at Lily.

At time.

Why should Margaret get better?

Why should Daniel get weekends?

Why should people who caused harm become more complex than monsters?

Dr. Mills? We don't have adult therapist. Could introduce Dr. Hannah Lee as mine.

She asked:

“What would justice look like if no one ever improved?”

“They’d stay away.”

“And Lily?”

“Safe.”

“Would she be safer with a father who remained dangerous or one who changed?”

I hated it.

“Changed.”

“Then his change benefits her even if you never forgive him.”

That was key.

I could let improvement exist without rewarding past.

Daniel could be a better father.

Margaret could accept no.

Neither erased garage.

I stopped using Lily’s relationship with them to measure whether my anger was valid.

It was valid already.
