Chapter 12 - The First Visit After Jail

Daniel’s first post release contact happened at a therapeutic center.
Lily was nine by then.
Her hair reached just below ears.
She had chosen not to cut it.
Not because long hair was sacred.
Because she wanted growth.
Daniel entered first.
No Margaret.
No plaid shirt.
Just gray sweater.
He sat.
Lily walked in with Dr. Chen.
I watched through one way? Better parent not necessarily observe. We can say therapist later summarized.
Lily said:
“You look older.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“So do you.”
“You were gone.”
“Yes.”
“Did you hate jail?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Dr. Chen redirected gently:
“It’s okay to be angry.”
Daniel said:
“She’s allowed.”
Lily stared.
Then:
“Why did you do it?”
Daniel answered:
“Because I was angry at your mom and scared she would leave me. I wanted a video that made her look dangerous.”
“Why my hair?”
“I thought Grandma cutting it would make Mom react.”
“That’s mean.”
“Yes.”
“Did you care that I was scared?”
“I cared, but not enough to stop. That was wrong.”
Lily cried.
“Did you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
Daniel started crying too.
“Because loving someone does not automatically make you safe. I wasn’t safe that day.”
Dr. Chen later told me that was one of healthiest things he said.
No:
I loved you so it wasn’t abuse.
No:
I made a mistake.
He named unsafe.
Lily stayed twenty minutes.
Then asked to leave.
Daniel accepted.
After:
“How was it?”
She shrugged.
“Sad.”
“Do you want again?”
“Not next week.”
“Okay.”
A month later she asked again.
Gradual.
No automatic reunification.
Family court required Daniel to complete parenting and domestic violence intervention, therapy, and demonstrate accountability before expanding.
He did.
Not perfectly.
Once he complained in parenting app that supervised visits were “humiliating.”
Maya replied:
They exist for child safety.
He apologized next day.
