Chapter 16 - Daniel Stops Saying “But”
Daniel’s progress was measurable in one word.
But.
At first:
I held her down, but Margaret had clippers.
I recorded Claire, but I was afraid of her temper.
I moved money, but Mom helped us.
I lied, but Claire threatened divorce.
Every apology had an escape hatch.
Then, after intervention program, “but” started disappearing.
Therapeutic visit:
“I held you down. I was wrong.”
No but.
“I used your fear to provoke Mom. I was wrong.”
No but.
“I helped Grandma think she had authority over your body. I was wrong.”
Lily noticed.
“He talks different.”
“Yes.”
“Do you trust?”
“More than before.”
“Do I have to?”
“No.”
She liked that.
At age ten, Lily requested one unsupervised afternoon with Daniel.
Dr. Chen evaluated.
No Margaret.
Public places.
Phone access.
Return time.
I hated it.
Allowed because safety team supported and Lily wanted.
Daniel took her to aquarium.
She came home excited.
“Dad bought me shark.”
Stuffed shark.
“Good.”
“He asked before taking picture.”
That hit.
Because camera had been weapon.
Asking mattered.
The next visit was two weeks later.
Then monthly.
