Chapter 15 - Dr. Carter’s Notes
A year after report, I returned to Dr. Carter for Lily’s annual physical.
Lily wore a yellow T shirt.
Hair brushing shoulders.
Dr. Carter did not mention hair.
Good.
She asked:
“How’s school?”
“Fine.”
“Sleep?”
“Better.”
“Headaches?”
“No.”
“Anyone making you feel unsafe now?”
Lily thought.
“No.”
Simple.
Dr. Carter examined scalp.
No scarring requiring treatment.
A few tiny areas barely visible.
Physical healing complete.
At end Lily said:
“You called people.”
Dr. Carter paused.
“Yes.”
“Was Mom mad?”
I smiled.
“I was scared.”
Dr. Carter said:
“My job is to help keep kids safe.”
“Did you know Dad would go to jail?”
“No.”
“Did you want him to?”
“No.”
That answer surprised Lily.
“Why not?”
“I wanted adults who investigate to decide facts. I wanted you safe.”
Lily nodded.
Then:
“Okay.”
In parking lot she asked:
“Do you like Dr. Carter?”
“Yes.”
“She didn’t pick sides.”
“She picked your safety.”
“Is that a side?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
Maybe.
But she meant something important.
Professionals did not need love Daniel or hate Margaret.
