Chapter 13 - The School Picture

School picture day arrived.

Lily’s hair was chin length.

She asked for braids.

Not possible yet.

We did two tiny clips.

She stared in mirror.

“Grandma liked long hair.”

I froze.

“I thought she cut it because she hated it.”

“She liked controlling it.”

Lily looked at me.

“Can I hate hair?”

“Yes.”

“Can I love it?”

“Yes.”

“Can I shave it someday?”

My chest tightened.

“Yes.”

“Even after?”

“If you choose.”

She smiled.

“Not now.”

Choice.

That became the healing arc.

At school, picture came out beautiful.

Not because hair.

Because she smiled.

I sent a copy to Daniel through approved parenting app.

He replied:

Thank you.

Nothing else.

No complaint.

Margaret did not receive.

No contact meant no photos.

Some relatives thought cruel.

I stopped explaining.

Then Margaret petitioned family court for grandparent visitation.

I almost laughed from disbelief.

Her attorney argued:

She completed sentence.

Expressed remorse.

Had longstanding bond.

Lily once loved her.

Court considered.

Because some jurisdictions allow grandparent petitions under certain circumstances.

Our lawyer argued no contact was still recommended by therapist and criminal probation had only recently ended.

Dr. Chen submitted letter:

Direct contact currently not clinically advisable. Child remains fearful and has not requested.

Judge denied without prejudice.

Not forever.

No automatic rights.

Margaret cried.

I felt no victory.

Lily did not know.

She did not need.

Months later, Margaret withdrew future petition voluntarily.

Why?

Her therapist? Maybe through attorney she wrote:

“I realized going to court to force contact would repeat what I did in garage: ignoring her no.”

That was meaningful.

May you like

Still not enough for Lily.

But meaningful.
