Chapter 9 - The Brothers

Lucas came first.

He asked meet through attorney.

Claire allowed.

Lucas was thirty four, two years younger than Brandon.

He looked exhausted.

“I didn’t know.”

I believed some.

Not all.

“What did you know?”

“That you and Brandon were funding Blue Harbor.”

“Did you ever hear me say?”

“No.”

“Did you see my signature?”

“Yes.”

“The forged one.”

He looked down.

Then:

“Why ask Brandon whether I knew title was Diane only?”

He flinched.

“I thought weird.”

“And?”

“He said estate planning.”

“Why not ask me?”

“Because you always hated talking money at family events.”

I laughed.

“I hated being asked for money.”

He winced.

Fair.

Then management fees.

He received $8,400 over sixteen months for managing duplex.

Was that market rate? Roughly.

He did work.

Tenant calls.

Repairs.

Listings.

Not fraudulent by itself.

Then wedding.

He knew I gave $35k.

Did he know Blue Harbor later paid him $22k?

“Yes.”

“What did Brandon say?”

“That was his contribution.”

“Did you think he had twenty two thousand?”

“He makes good money.”

True.

Then:

“Why did Blue Harbor pay?”

“He said family fund.”

Then he whispered:

“I should have asked.”

Yes.

Then Liam.

More defensive.

“I didn’t steal from you.”

“I didn’t say.”

“You’re freezing accounts.”

“Court.”

He had received $18k support.

He believed from Diane/Brandon.

No forged documents.

He had no role.

Then:

“Are you paying back?”

“My lawyer says wait.”

Reasonable.

Then he snapped:

“You always acted like better because you tracked everything.”

I almost laughed.

“I clearly didn’t.”

He looked ashamed.

Then:

“Brandon said you didn’t care about money because you made more.”

There.

I earned more than Brandon by about 40 percent.

Operations director at a logistics technology firm.

He earned well too.

But family thought my income made withdrawals harmless.

Then Lucas revealed another conversation.

Brandon after Lake Geneva purchase:

“Elena says if we keep assets in Mom’s name, creditors can’t touch family.”

I never.

That was potentially fraudulent asset-protection claim.

Then:

“He told me you wanted no ownership because of work liability.”

Again.

He constructed rationale.

Then one key text from Lucas:

Can you send Elena’s approval for Lake Geneva? Bank asks.

Brandon sent fake PDF.

Lucas forwarded to title company.

Lucas had relied.

Not necessarily accomplice.

Then his lawyer offered cooperate and return any fees court determined improper.

Good.

Liam same.

The family was not criminal syndicate.

It was one man’s web, made easier by everyone choosing not to ask the person whose money anchored it.

Then Claire told me:

“Do not turn every beneficiary into Brandon.”

I knew.

Then police assault charge against Brandon moved.

Prosecutor offered deferred? Because first offense, slap to elderly? It could be misdemeanor battery/domestic? Margaret not household? She lived there, family relation by marriage. We can keep simple:

Brandon charged with misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct, plus separate investigation into attempted witness influence after message asking Margaret change story.

He pleaded not guilty.

No jail yet.

Then financial prosecutor.

Because fake documents and email impersonation crossed into potential identity theft/forgery, bank referred to financial crimes unit.

Detective Ryan Cole interviewed me.

He asked:

“Did you ever authorize Brandon to sign for you?”

“For routine household forms after review.”

“Could he reasonably believe blanket authority?”

“No.”

Evidence texts.

Then:

“Did you know Blue Harbor?”

“No.”

“Lake Geneva?”

“No.”

“Trust?”

“No.”

Then:

“Did you give gifts to Diane?”

“Yes.”

Birthday.

Medical.

Not these.

Then:

“Could some transfers be considered marital spending by joint owner?”

“Yes, I assume.”

The detective nodded.

“We’re not criminalizing every joint-account decision. We’re focused on falsified records and identity use.”

Good.

Then domain.

He could subpoena registration.

Then forged signature.

Then fake gift letters.

Potential criminal counts.

Not every $276k “stolen.”

Civil court handles division.

I appreciated precision.

Then detective asked:

“Why do you think Brandon accused Margaret?”

I told.

But labeled theory.

He wrote.

Then later phone extraction from Brandon under discovery revealed note in task app:

M gets out this weekend.

Below:

10.5.

No explanation.

Dated before assault.

The staged cash allegation moved from theory toward plan.
