Chapter 18 - Margaret Moves On

Mom turned seventy.
I offered party.
She wanted six people.
Claire.
Amy? We haven't introduced. Keep small.
Diane came by invitation.
I hesitated but attended.
No Brandon family brothers.
Diane brought blue scarf.
No awkward.
Mom laughed.
At dinner, someone asked:
“Where’s Elena living now?”
I answered.
No marriage.
Then Mom stood toast:
“To making our own choices.”
Simple.
Later she told:
“I spent months thinking I caused your divorce by moving in.”
“You didn’t.”
“I know now.”
Then:
“I also think I stayed too long in your apartment.”
“No.”
“I asked questions.”
“Good.”
She smiled.
“If I hadn’t, maybe…”
“No alternate.”
She understood.
Then she volunteered at library.
Made friends.
Grief shifted.
She stopped introducing herself as widow.
Then one day she said:
“I want travel.”
“Where?”
Arizona.
Her sister.
She booked alone.
I almost offered manage.
Stopped.
She did.
That was growth for me too.
Then Brandon release date approached.
He served around twenty six months with credit/good behavior, then supervised release remainder? We sentenced 32 months active; maybe released after 27 with credits. We'll say after twenty eight months under lawful credits, then supervision. Fine.
Victim notification.
My chest tightened.
He would live with Diane initially? Supervisors allowed? Diane maybe yes. But I did not want. No restraining for me maybe. Margaret order expired? Could have extended no-contact. She did not want contact.
Brandon moved to halfway/transitional apartment.
Found job in purchasing not finance? Supervision barred fiduciary. Inventory operations.
He remained no contact with Mom unless she consented.
She did not.
No contact with me beyond email through counsel unless I consent.
I didn’t.
Then Diane told me he apologized.
I said:
“Don’t update.”
She stopped.
Then Lucas and Liam repaired with him? Their choice.
Then I saw Brandon accidentally at grocery store.
Same aisle pattern. He saw me.
Stopped.
I felt nothing at first, then adrenaline.
He stepped back.
“Sorry.”
Then turned and left.
No pursuit.
I called Claire.
Not police, no violation if accidental and he departed.
Then therapist.
My body remembered before mind.
Normal.
Then weeks later Brandon sent via counsel:
I saw Elena accidentally and left. I will continue respecting boundaries.
No need.
But good.
Then I started dating someone named Michael? Could add but not necessary. User's story can end with independence. But long arc maybe Elena finds new relationship? We can avoid making romantic replacement required.
She bought a condo after 3 years.
Mom visited.
She asked:
“Keys?”
I held spare.
Then smiled.
“Emergency only.”
Mom:
“I know.”
I handed.
This time keys by choice.
Then at closing I thought of keys left on Brandon table.
Not all keys mean leaving.
Some mean trust chosen.
Then Mom brought blue vase for new home.
I groaned.
“Again?”
“You hate symbolism.”
“Yes.”
May you like
“Then it’s just vase.”
We put flowers.
